Thats odd, you can use 4v intakes on 2v clevelands, you would think you could do the same thing for the 400's, that is unless the aftermarket make the ports on the intakes with less material so they can't seal like you say.

Any 400 intake will work on a 400 with 2v heads the only 4v intake made for a 400 is aftermarket, made to fit 2v ports. to put 351c 4v heads on a 400 you use a 351c 4v intake with spacers or weld an aluminuim intake then have it machined flat again. you cant use a 4v intake on 2v heads on a cleveland the ports would never seal. But there are aftermarket 4v intakes to fit the 2v heads.

The early 2bbl cleveland/M heads didn't have the water jacket around the exhaust guide like the later ones do. Supposedly they flow much better on the exhaust side than the later M heads do. It sure looks like it when you look down the port. On the later heads, you can barely fit a finger between the guide and the port short-side. On the early heads you can stick 2 fingers in there.
