I have recently aquired a Aluminum 4" diameter driveshaft off of a 98 extended cab, that is 68" between the u-joints. Before I tear my truck apart tomorrow, does anyone happen to know offhand if this is the correct length? It is difficult to get an accurate measurement of this 2 piece shaft while it is in the truck, although the rather crude measurement I have made indicates it should be pretty close.
The stock, 2 piece driveshaft is just about the same length as the 1 piece aluminum shaft out of the newer trucks. You have to slightly compress the slip yoke behind the center support bearing, but then they are both 68" between u-joint centers.
At some point I'm probably going to have to do a body or suspension lift as there is not much room between the floor of the cab and the 1 piece driveshaft at this point. I tweaked the floor pan a little with a BFH to get about an extra 1/8" clearance. Fortunately the driveshaft didn't bottom out on the floor pan on a little 5 mile drive I took to check for vibrations. I still have a slight vibration on decel, but it is nowhere near as pronounced as it was with the other shaft...and I'm rid of the center bearing roar that started the past week or so ago. I suspect from start to finish it took me about 2 hours to swap the two shafts, with most of the time spent trying to get one of the center bearing bolts out.
