I have a ranger 4x4 xlt, 3.0 and it just kills in the snow. I can always pass people up just plowing through the stuff. It seems to be one of the best snow vehicles around.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Nov-02 AT 06:36 PM (EST)]I say (type) this with all due respect, PLEASE BE CAREFUL, (much better to get temporarily "stuck" than to assume the responsibility\consequences & obligations of OVER-confidence).
That said - it depends on a number of factors\variables\conditions - what type of tires are you running (?), are you 'lifted' (?), depth of snow and type (wet\slushy or dry\hard-pack)?, ascent\descent (?), straight or 'curvey' roads (?), and though it's probably not a relevant question on a Ranger, wheel-base (length), etc., etc., etc,...
Frankly, though I wish MY `99 Ranger 3.0 (stock\off-road-"Sport"-factory pkg.) 4X4 were as "sure-footed" in the "average" snow (say, 4-8 inches inches), my mom's Subaru Forester is better - and I say this having driven both in a wide-variety of inclement weather - on the most winding (TRUE "hair-pins") roads the Appalachin\Allegheny mountains have to offer.
I DO love my Ranger though!
PS - Just curious, where do you live\drive - regarding weather?
I live in mt shasta california and there is tons of snow here. All kinds of snow, form slush to powder. Curvy and straight roads. I live in the mountains and have to drive in the snow almost daily and it handles beautifully. I have taken it through 2 feet of lighter snow with no problem whatsoever.
i'm glad your's is better then mine..... 89 2wd extended cab 2.9 auto od 4:10's and ls.... it stays parked during the winter, unless it clears up and everything melts off so i know there won't be any snow on the roads/driveways
I had a '97 regular cab 4x4 short wheel base with the 3.0/manual and it was a freakin' snowmibile! I can't wait until the first good snow tho try my '02 edge 4x4! This is my third straight 3.0/manual Ranger, I just love them!
No matter how good a particular vehicle may seem on snow, doesn't mean there's no danger. I wish I would have asked the guy his name after I had to pull his Ranger out of the ditch after he tried to pass my on a snowy mountain road. Lucky for him he went on that side instead of the side of the road with the rock cliff that goes down about 500 feet. Oh, and there was only about 6 inches of snow at the time.
