Hey yall. I'd like some quick help please, forgive me for not using search first, it usualy turns up a million posts that have nothing to do with what I wanted so I dont even bother anymore.
Anyways, I'm going to go look at a 83 F250 2wd tomorrow. It's got a 351W and AOD. Just wondering what kind of emissions junk is *suppose* to be under the hood. I had a 82 a while back with a 351W and AOD but there werent any emmissions on it, but we didnt test then, I think theyre fixin to start testin (or atleast inspecting for the right gear) soon and dont want to have to spend extra $ to make it legal.
Also, the fellow mentioned that the carb is a variable venturie or something and always runs a bit rich. Is that a common problem? I have a Holly in the garage I could swap out after I make a new kick down lever for it (and change the plugs!!) just wondering if that's a common problem with that carb or if this dude just doesnt know how to adjust it right. Mine had an Edelbrock on it so I never had to mess with the stock stuff.
Your 250 should have an air pump under the hood. It's right above the alternator, but all it does is push air into the exhaust to try to trick the sniffer into thinking that it's running cleaner than it is. It will also have a load of vacuum lines going here and there. If you have an EGR valve, it will be between the intake and the carb facing to the rear of the engine. I just got rid of all my emmisions junk and I still have it, so if you need it, it's yours.
As far as the carb, get rid of the Variable Venturi as soon as possible. It's not even worth messing with. I rebuilt the old Holley 1480 as well, and I learned it was a waste of money for the rebuild kit. I put on an Edelbrock 1406 on my 86 F-250 with the 460, and out of the box, it runs better than the Holley ever did. If you go with an Edelbrock, you can use your old air cleaner, I did. It fit with no interference problems. I also have the stock intake manifold, and EGR valve, and the truck runs great. Good luck!
my mitchell emissions manual shows the 82 windsor in an f250 u8500 gvw having a f2 2150 motorcraft carb. dont think i ever have seen a vv on a f250, even in california. on the emission label tag under the hood at the bottom under the vacuum hose diag, will be the emissions id. it will say like air,02,egr etc. this will tll you what was on it when it left the factory. egr you know 02 is oxygen sensor etc. if any of the items are missing you will see it. also the vacuum hose diagram will show the listing. you see a hose going to an air pump on the diagram, but no air pump, you have a problem. as for an edelbrock or holley, unless it is a oem replacment or equialivent, it will not pass. you CAN NOT put a four barrel on a vehicle that a four barrell was not offered on that year with exact displacment. in 82 no four bbl was offered on any ford truck or van except the 460 7.5l. now you could say the motor was newer (like an 85 5.8ho) but not older. than put an oem 4bbl on. but you must also meet the emmision standard for that year. you may also put emisions of a lower gvw, but not higher. meaning if your truck is over 8500lbs gvw, you can keep your emmisions or got to the lighter gvw, but not the other way. i will agree with the 4180 or vv bad designs. the boosters in the 4180 are famed for freezing up in below freezing conditions if the hot air riser is not working or missing. they also have a low rpm fuel atomizing issue with the booster venturis. i put a 80457 (600 cfm)holley on my f250 514 and now get 10+ MPG not towing, where the 4180 even professionly rebuilt and flow tested would ever do 6 maybe 7mpg. but you must be careful with testing and the laws. talk to a local referee before making any changes. he or she can tell you what is legal, and what is not. emission laws are tricky, but if you understand them you can still make an awesome running truck. wht not put a 5.0 cobra FI motor in? it will make as much or more than any carb'd 351 will, plus you can have a supercharger to boot, and its all legal!!! and every junkyard has a handful of 5.0 ho mustang motors and harness.
In 83, If you had a truck over 8500 GVWR it didn't come with any emission controls because it was considered a "big truck". My dad bought our F-250 in the Heavy Duty version back in 83 to bypass the emission controls under the hood. The only thing we have on our truck is an EGR valve. If the truck you are looking at is a regular cab the heavy duty version of that would have an 8600 GVWR, and a supercab heavy duty would have an 8800 GVWR.
Yes Sir, it's a reg cab long bed. By no emmision controls do you also mean no cat.conv.? I suppose the underhood sticker will tell me that too, but while we're on the subject.....
I realy appreciate yall's help. I saw a color pic of the truck today and I'm getting sorta excited bout it. Tomorrow cant come fast enough!
