86 pressure regulator

what is best way to check the pressure regualator for failure other than smelling the vaccuum line for gas, because everything smells odd under a hood? i changed the o2 sensor and going down the road the truck would slow down almost stall and black smoke shooting out the back i let up off the gas and it would catch back up and do it again about a mile or so later, i pulled codes and got a 33,41 in run condition...can you use a mityvac to check vaccuum and if so shoud the vac hold steady? or check fuel pressure at the shrader valve? what are the values if the pressure regulator is bad, i know it should be around 40 psi?

Normaly you can see the gas, but you can use a hand vacuum pump with a gauge to check for vacuum loss.

Did you run the pinpoint test for the code 41?

No i didn't run a pinpoint test....how do you do it?

oh forgot to metion, i put $10.00 worth gas in after replacing o2 sensor and went 23 miles and truck is nearly empty!!! with bogging down and shooting out black smoke, my gas is going straight out the pipe!!
