Hi guys, I recently bought an '85 F150 with the 300-6 and have dealt with the tickety tick ever since I bought it. My question is, would retorquing the rocker arms down make a difference? I read elsewhere that 10w40 oil might help the noise somewhat, but I haven't changed the oil yet. I'm running 89 fuel right now and that's helped get rid of pinging, but I still want to quiet this beast as much as possible. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
First off the sound you are describing could be a number of things.
Exhaust manifold leak or header pipe leak - check (Replace gasket if there is one)
Lifter tap - Low oil pressure or lifters not properly adusted or simply not getting enough oil to one or more lifters. (Oil pressure should be checked with a good mechanical guage not the factory guage)
The fuel won't make a difference unless the problem is spark knock. (check timing and fuel/air mixture, you could be running lean). A poorly cooled engine can also cause spark knock due to increased cylinder temperature.
An 85 is probably got a lot of miles on it. It's going to make some noise.
Oil vicosity might help for a little while until it warms up and the vicosity changes.
my truck only does it under load.
but i know it is a manifold leack because it is missing like 2 bolts and i have to replace them when i do the head gasket
An exhaust leak would be more constant from my experience. That sounds like the typical ford lifter tick. It gets annoying but other then playing with different oils you would have to replace it and add a high volume oil pump to insure it doesn't happen again at least for not a while anyway.
