I just bought a Pioneer AVIC-N1 and in order to run the navigation feature, I have to hook one of the wires up to the vehicle speed sensor. What is this and where can I find it? If you can give me a specific wire color I'm connecting to that would be great. I looked in my Haynes manual but it didn't seem to match up with what I'm looking for per the Pioneer manual. Pioneer manual says it should be by the computer while the Haynes manual says something about it coming off the rear end? I'm confused. Thanks in advance for any info. Vehicle info is in the sig.
What year is your truck? Have you tried the dealers shop manual?
My local dealer has allowed me access to their shop manuals to find stuff. I know the wire you are talking about, look near the glovebox. There should be a gray wire running along somewhere behind the box. I don't know for sure, but another member rigged the radio for speed sensitive volume using that wire. It might be the same as the VSS.
Is that the same wire that the Super Lift Truespeed splices into?? If so, it is gray/black. Also, if you have installed the Truespeed, would you need to splice the wire after the Truespeed connector? Just wondering becuase i was planning on purchasing the Poineer unit as well...
Thanks for the info, I'm gonna hook it up tonight so hopefully I can get it up and running.
Jake00 - Still let me know what you come up with, in case I decide to "come back" to that step. ha ha.
I've read nothing but great things about that stereo and from the looks of it, it's sweet. I went over to ultimate electronics and played around on it for a bit and it's really easy to use. I'll definitely post my own thoughts on it once I get used to using it.
BTW- I got it off ebay brand new (factory sealed) for $1355.
Speed sensor wire is grey with black stripe--in most superduty it will be in the instument cluster and on some it will be accessable right behind the radio
the reverse wire you need is Black with pink stripe--found by fuse box
the parking brake wire is lt. grn. --if you choose to use it
Wow, Im installing the same unit tomorrow. I guess all us SD ownes have the same taste. Please post where you found the wire, and also the Reverse wire, and where you placed the hideaway unit and GPS antenna. Below is what I have found on wire locations so far. I have also been told from a few people that the VSS wire may also be located on the radio wire harness and that it is for sure a grey/black wire.
VSS Wire: LOCATION 11 OR 12- POSITION 58 OR 68 OF 104 PIN CONNECTOR (see link to matrix) VSS Wire Color: GRAY/BLACK VSS Pulse: 8000 VSS Tach Wire: LOCATION 11 OR 12- POSITION 48 OR 78 OF 104 PIN CONNECTOR Tach Signal Wire Color: TAN/YELLOW OR PINK/WHITE Brake Switch Positive: GREEN/RED Brake Switch Negative: GREEN
So, if I want the AVIC to operate correctly (becuase I have the SL True-speed), do i have to splice the VSS Wire after the True-Speed to ensure an accurate read out. If so, I hope the wire on the AVIC is long enough to reach to the front left side of the hood area as the True-Speed is spliced in directly in front of the ABS module (under the Vapor Canister). Thanks.
To get a really clear signal for the GPS and grab as many satellites as possible, I ran the GPS antenna up into the exteme corner of the dash. This way it has a large and fairly un-obstructed view of the sky. The parking brake wire is integral to DOT regulations and to the function of the unit. Many features of the unit rely on a parking brake engaged "signal" before being used.

Same here, i cringe when people tell me they payed 2k at crutchfield for it. tHE GPS brain is under the rear bench along with my eclipse 5 channel amp. I was thinking of running the antenna out the back window on top of the cab, but for now its on the center of my dash.
as far as parking brake wire... its grounded all is well
Where did you put your antenna? flat on the dash in a corner? I was planning on placing mine on the center of the dash on the little cover that hides the dash mounting screw.
Did you use the metal plate that they tell you to use to mount the antenna on?
Also, where did you find the VSS wire?

Well, 3 hours later and I finally got it installed (by myself). I can't tell you how friggin' cool this unit is. I have no idea how to use it, but I'm learin' my way around it. I still have yet to hook up the vss and reverse wires and the navigation is still extremely accurate. I'm gonna finish it up in the morning. I also got the voice command thing, it's kinda lame but I wanted the remote that comes with it.
Only issue I'm having is with the XM unit I got (not pioneer). For some reason the head unit won't recognize (highlight) the xm button for me to choose. I haven't set up service with XM yet so I'm hoping that's the issue. Other than that, this thing RULES!!
BTW- Thanks for the info on the vss, I'm gonna yank the dash out in the morning. Hopefully I can get it all done before the truckin' nationals!
As far as the antenna's go, I ran the XM and the GPS antenna's up into the headliner and out the third brakelight. It looks awesome. I need to put some silicone around it to seal it up but it looks clean.
Please let us know where you find the VSS wire. Im installing tomorrow afternoon and you could save me some search time. I pulled out my stock head unit tonight and didnt see any sign of the VSS wire, and I do have the 6 disc changer.
