Anybody out there ever get this code from their tranny? If so, what causes it and what was the fix? Did a search on the web and found it described as "Torque Converter Clutch System Stuck in Off Possition". I got it yesterday when my overdrive light started flashing and the truck didn't hardly want to move. Any assistance would be appreciated.
p1744 code is the excessive slippage detected by pcm monitoring hydraluc pressures within the trans. What you need to understand is this is a code that can be caused by more than one problem!
A short list of what it could be!
Low fluid
high fluid temp
low pump output pres.
leaking torque converter seals (pressure within)
Bad tft (trans fluid temp sensor)
Bad torque converter clutch(TCC)
Loose valve body bolts within the trans pan
could also be a loose connection electrically at the transmision harness
I hate to say this but your going to be at the mercy of a trans shop or dealer!

Believe it or not, but I did a search for P1744 and this is the only thread that came up. So...what became of the P1744 and your 4R100 tranny?
Also...any other FTE folks have experience with this P1744 code? Any suggestions or advice is appreciated!

It's been a while but from what I remember it's what caused me to have to get a new tranny.
What I was told was that the tranny was stuck in "overdrive" plus a variety of other things that I can't remember. Also, when the code was thrown it put the truck in limp mode by causing it to misfire which made me think I had something else going wrong.
Long story short, the reason why the truck didn't hardly want to move from a dead stop was because it was starting out in overdrive and the tranny shop told me that it was going to cost almost as much to fix as it was going to be to replace it. I didn't even hesitate, that's when I ordered the Factory Tech Monster Box.
Unfortunately...yesterday coming home, out of the blue, I get a check engine light on...and then a few seconds later the O/D light starts flashing. I make it home...as I was only about 3 miles away.
Before shutting down...thinking the "noise" I hear is coming from the engine compartment (power steering pump???)...I take a peak under towards the tranny. Sounds are whinning, growling, clanks, etc.
I pull the code with my Equus scan tool...and 1744 comes up. This is what my scanner lists for that code:
Well...guess I am a victim of the 4R100 tranny. Although I have had my SD since 87,000 miles and just over 2yrs. My SD now has 101,600 miles. OBTW: When I purchased my SD...I did a complete fluid change. That includes the 4R100 tranny.
The 4R100 is a super reliable tranny compared to any automatic transmission put in a Ford Explorer. The 4R100 isn't that bad, with mechanical and tuning it can be a very good tranny.
when mine poops im getting a ford reman. hard to beat the 3 year/75000 mile warranty
I've dealt with Ford remans in Explorers and I wasn't really impressed. They give you the same crappy stock transmission with little or no upgrades at a stealership price. You can get more for your money elsewhere.

I'm probably headed that direction. Just checked the Motorcraft website...and they are advertising 3 year/100,000 mile warranty. I bet the years run-out before the mileage in either case.
