[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Apr-02 AT 05:22 PM (EST)]IT STARTED LAST YEAR. THE HOTEST DAY OF THE YEAR TO BE EXACT. I DROVE THE TRUCK SOME DISTANCE SHUT IT OFF, DID MY BUSINESS, AND WHEN I CAME BACK TO START IT SHE FIRED RIGHT UP, THEN DIED IMMEDIATELY. FROM THEN SHE'LL JUST CRANK, AND CRANK, AND CRANK, TILL THE BATTERY IS DEAD. THEN WHEN NIGHT FALLS, SHE FIRES RIGHT UP AGAIN. ALL SUMMER LONG IT WAS LIKE THAT ON ANY HOT DAY, BUT WHEN NIGHT FELL SHE'D FIRE.
WINTER COMES SHE'S RUNNIN' LIKE A DREAM.
SPRING COMES, OUR FIRST HOT DAY STRIKES, SKIES ARE CLEAR, SUN IS SHOWING, ABOUT 60 DEGREES OUT. I DRIVE IT SOME DISTANCE, DO MY BUSINESS, COME BACK SHE FIRES RIGHT UP, THEN DIES IMMEDIATELY. THAT WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT IT HAPPENED SINCE THE END OF LAST SUMMER. IT'S HAPPENED NOW 1 OTHER TIME SINCE THEN, AND OF COURSE IT WAS NICE OUT. THE NEXT DAY IT WAS COLD, AND SHE RAN JUST FINE.
I'VE FOUND THAT IT NEVER REALLY MATTERS HOW LONG OR HOW FAR I DRIVE IT, IT SEEMS THAT THIS ONLY HAPPENS ON A NICE, SUNSHININ' DAY.
OH YEAH, THE HISTORY OF REPAIRS ON THIS 1989 FORD RANGER 2.3L, IS THE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACE, AND THAT WAS BEFORE ANY OF THESE PROBLEMS STARTED TO HAPPEN. IT WAS A FEW MONTHS AFTER THE FUEL PUMP WENT, THAT THIS MYSTERY PROBLEM CAME.
OH, AND, IT'S NOT THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR. GOOD LUCK!!!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Apr-02 AT 11:26 PM (EST)]I've heard of a very simular situation. The problem was there was a wire pinched between metal and so when it was hot it caused it to short out. Since you had a fuel pump installed prior to the problem I would check the wires there first.
Also, the wires connected to the plate that the fuel pump line runs thru could be loose and/or have corrosion causing the same problem.
FYI: It is possible for you to have two fuel pumps, one on the left frame rail and one inside the tank. (I have an 88' 2.3L Ranger and I had to replace both on mine.)
Let me know if any of these solve the problem or if you have any further questions.
You may want to check your fuel pump. I had a Olds Calis that did the exact same thing. The problem got worse even in warm weather. I tried to wrap the fuel line thinking it was vapor locking, but did not help. Replaced the fuel pump. No more starting problems.

I've had a very similar problem with 2 different BIIs. It turned out to be the in tank pump. When it gets hot under the truck, the front pump pulls a vacuum. Once, it was the wiring corroded almost through. It was enough to light a test light at the tank, but not enough to drive the pump. The other was the pump itself. Do yourself a favour if it is the pump - I replaced an aftermarket pump after only about 30000 miles - OEM is definitely better.
Hi
I had the same problem with a Ford van and it was the pickup coil in the distributor. Spray it with contact cleaner when it acts up and this will cool it down. That how I found my problem. You need to determine if its gas or electrical. Good Luck
