We put a new clutch in when we did the engine swap in May on my 82 F150 with a 300l6. I have the borg warner tranny, we put a heavy duty clutch on it. Yesterday, while driving home, I noticed that something was making a grinding noise. Didn't seem to change with acceleration, but it did go away when I put the clutch pedal in.
Has this happened to anyone else? What do I look at first? I can say I am not excited about taking the tranny out again.
HELP
I will ad that this happened at the worst possible time as I have parts on order to give it some more pep, an EFI Split Exhaust Manifold, A Clifford Single Plane Intake and soon the 500cfm Holley 2 bbl.
My guess would be the throw out bearing. You did put a new one in right? Sometimes the throwout can go bad early, but it is rare. If it is old then you may have worn it out, especially with a heavier load from the hd clutch.
If the noise goes away just as the clutch starts to engage as you push in, that is another sign the bearing is out.
Thank you Jim, when I take it apart tomorrow I will be sure to check that. I am certain we put a new one on when we changed the clutch, but maybe I got a bad one...
