Carb Problems??? Fuel Pump? IDK!

hey guys, my truck (87' F150 XL 351W 4bbl) is having some issues. I pump the pedal 3 times and it kicks over fine (when its cold), but then when I stomp on the gas real quick to take it off choke, it just starts to sputter and die. Now, mind ya, I'm low on gas (5 gallons at a time.... bad brakes that I'm working on...I start it every day... ). So any ideas? Also, does this thing have an in tank fuel pump or not? I get conflicting info. other people tell me because it's carbed that it doesn't and others tell me it does. Can anyone clarify?

latah!

Well, first things first, AC DC Kicks ***. My truck is newer and has EFI and electric pumps. Look on the front drivers side of your engine and see if there is a fuel pump there. If not, then you probably have an electric pump. Sounds like your accelerator pump is working fine cause when you pump it, it fires right off. but you may have a plugged fuel filter or other carb problems. Unhook the fuel fuel line where it attaches to the carb, and stick it in a bottle and very carefully crank the engine to see if it's pumping fuel. Unhook the coil wire while you do this to stop starting or fires. It should fill this pop bottle faster than you would think. A few seconds should fill a 12 oz bottle.

ya, AC/DC is awesome!!!

But any ways It has a fuel pump on the block I just wanted to know if there was one in the tank.
I think the pump is ok. it filled an 8 oz. glass coke bottle real quick...didn't want the gas eatin' a plastic bottle...

It only starts to die when I stomp the pedal to kick the choke off. Then it acts like it's starving for fuel. I noticed there was something called a throttle kicker on the carb. That, along with all of the other emissions junk is disconnected and in a box in the shed. I know that regular carbs without the emissions crap doesn't have a throttle kicker. Or at least I haven't see one with one. The only vaccum to the carb is the vaccum advance line. All other ports are plugged.

I just can't figure this out...my truck bogs and dies when I take it off choke, my sleds did the same thing, my weedwacker...but the last 2 I have fixed...I just need this hoe to get straightened out and start running like something close to a vehicle... I"M ALWAYS PLAGUED WITH CARB PROBLEMS!!!!

Thanks though any other ideas?

Try this: Remove the air cleaner lid so you can see the butterfly in the carb. Have someone start the truck and hit the pedal, and see if the choke opens up. It sounds like it is not, and flooding the carb. Is it an electric choke? Check the power lead and the relay for it. As a temporary fix, you can tie the choke open or wedge a piece of wood in there to keep the flap open. You may have to adjust the float level, or replace the accelrator pump. Finally, if it has a blown power valve, it can give you fits. If it's the 4180 Holley, replace the whole carb!!! (That's what I have, but it is a reman. unit)

He he... the air cleaner came off a long time ago....Yup it's electric choke. It hooks into a wire that goes to the alternator harness...It is a 4180 remanufactured unit (champion 4180...) time to go buy a new carb then?
(uck! 283 bucks...) This thing is being such a "hoe" to me. It was replaced in 98', then had the engine replaced 2 years later, and 2 years after that, it sat on cape cod in the salt air for 4 years. When I got my greasy little paws on it, the truck had a rusted & stuck throttle linkage (which I have fixed) and a bad backfire, which was a result of a bad dizzy cap & rotor, and some other misc. stuff. what's this power valve stuff? Is it like a power jet on a snowmobile carb (mikuni VM series) where it bypasses the main jet and sends mucho grande amounts of fuel into the cyl.?
