I jus upgraded my stock alt and i installed a powermaster 200 amp alt and i also got rid of my interstate batt and put in a yellow top batt. when i turn the truck on its fine, until i turn my headlights on then the whole truck stalls, what would cause this? Im at a loss, btw its a 96 ford f250 hd with a 351w, thanks for any help--Dinty01
Go over all of your wiring and make sure you didnt mess with anything, did you have to cut the wires to get the bigger alternator in?? if you did are they right? and if you didnt did you put a new plug on??
I didnt cut any wires or move anything actually, it was very easy, i took the negative batt clamp off first, then positive, i took the battery out, and then i started the alt. first i took the serp belt off, then i loosened the top bolt, and removed the bottom 2 bolts, then went back and removed the top bolt. once i had the alt in my hands, i removed the charging wire and the 2 platic connectors on the back and that was it, instal was the reverse, now i have a whole bunch of problems, but beer is helping me with that---dinty01
hmmm, for some reason it just dosent make sense to me what is happening, i mean i understand what is going on, but it dosent seem like there should be any reason for this. so its only when you turn on your headlights?
yea, if i turn the parking lamps on its fine but as soon as i turn the headlamps on the truck jus stalls, im not sure why its killing my ignition system, linkily i was at the audio shop doing all this work and we werent able to figure it out tonite, so we are gonna work on it tomorrow but its frustrating. ive replaced the alt before and i never had a problem with it, it took me all of about 5 mins to do and no probs, but now, i dont understand this. i checked my chiltons manual and i already tried everything they suggested in the trouble shooting section so i dont know.
almost sounds like you have a bare wire somewhere or something, that has nothing to do with the allt. but odd that it just starts to act up after a new alt.
yea im stumped for tonite anyways. i went over a lot of my wires checking for cracks, bare spots etc and i didnt find any, i checked as many ground posts as i could find, but nothing seemed to help. thanks for your replies but now its time for bed goodnight--dinty01
