How to explain the problem -Lets try - I have a 94 Ranger XLT with 4.0 Automatic (A4LD). Seems the tranny wants to down shift and then upshift between overdrive and 3rd. It usually happens around 55 mph. I'm wondering if there is a vehicle speed sensor that controls this? If so how is it tested? And where on the tranny is it located? The problem happens with and with out cruise control engaged.
Anyone have any experience with this type problem?
Thanks -
My mother had a '95 Explorer 4.0 with the same problem. At 55, the truck could never decide which gear it wanted...3 or OD. 55 is a very unconvenient speed to program a shift point...gee thanks Ford.
Our solution...we sold it.
Fortuneatly, my Ranger has the new 5-speed auto and I haven't had this problem yet.
I always thought a gear ratio change in the rear end would probably solve the issue. This would be easier to do if your truck is 2-wheel drive. The new gear ratio would change the engine RPM at 55, which would hopefully eliminate the constant searching for a gear. There may be other ways to fix the issue, but I don't know of any. That tranny is electronic, right? So there's not a whole lot else you can do about it.
There are a number of things that can cause this to happen. On mine the torque converter use to go in and out of lockup at 70 (about 3K rpm). It was a result of the condition of the transmission. At the last transmission overhaul, that I just did at 340K miles, I put in a shift kit, which modifies some of the valving in the control body. No more in and out of lock-up at 70 mph.
