Help, Explorer tranny problem

My Explorer 94 auto transmission is slipping in the morning. I have to put it in reverse and back it up a few meters and then the transmission will engage forward. Does not seem to have any problem when it warms up. Any ideas what could be causing this. The Explorer has 150K mi. I would appreciate any help.

Fluid level is the first thing to check. If it's low, it will do what you describe. Also check condition of fluid. Is it dark colored, or does it smell burnt? If so, change the fluid and filter. These are the obvious checks...You may have other issues, but these are probably the first things that someone at a shop would check anyway. And these would definitely cause your symptoms.

Good luck.

Thanks SJ. you right, I discovered today that it was very low. It was flushed by a shop about 2 months ago. However, I am still puzzled as to why It read fine when it was cold. I checked it that way before, but know that I did the check hot, after driving and moving the tranny thru the gears, I almost could not see it at all. I added over a quarter.

After a flush and fill, there can be air pockets in the torque converter. It can take 1-2 weeks to fully displace all the air pockets.

The manual should tell you to check the fluid warm. I don't know why you have to check oil cold, but tranny warm....that's the way it's been on every automatic I've even owned.

The above is true...but also when the fluid is hot it will expand a little. Also I think that the tranny will "hide" fluid when not in use (cold) and when you drive and get it warm, the fluid will move to it's proper level.

Looks like you had a combination of issues that conspired to give you problems. Glad you got it worked out.

Rocky J, during this period you mentioned is it possible transmission slips... ?? 2 days ago I changed fuid and filter for my 97 4X4 explorer, 113.000 miles and I have noticed It slips a couple of times, only at High rpm, lets say over 65 mph while I step on gas...
