I bought a 2003 Ranger Edge 3.0L 2WD Supercab about three weeks ago. This is the first Ford I've ever owned and I am happy with it for the most part. What am I not happy with? The shaking. I've searched the forums to see if anyone had similar problems with late modem Rangers and a few folks have, but no one seems to REALLY know why this happens. I don't want to live with it, so can anyone help? It shakes between 40 and 45mph, but doesn't seem to any other time, however, it did shake suddenly on the Interstate last weekend...it was actually very bad and pretty scary. Tires were balanced by the dealer, but that didn't help a bit. I really want to enjoy my new Ford truck and tell all my Ford-hating friends and family what a good truck Ford makes, but I'm not getting off to a good start. I can't imagine taking them for a drive and hitting 40mph and seeing their eyes rattle around in their sockets.
I have a 2002 Ranger Edge Super Cab 2WD with 6000 miles and have never experianced what you are. I agree. Take it to the dealer.
I love my truck so far and I am sure you will too if the dealer and staff care about service.
Well, it looks like they found some broken belts in the new Goodyears, so I'm getting them replaced today. I'll let you all know if this fixes the problem. I hope it does, but I'm not betting my lunch on it.
I have had the exact same thing happen to me. i have a 94 f-150. Around 35-45mph it shakes and sounds like a deep bass rumbling. is that what your ranger sounds like? I 'll check the tires.
My suggestion was going to be the tires. I went through hell with my '91 when it was new with similar problems with Firestones - 4 sets of tires in 40K miles. General the tires installed by the manufacturer (Ford) often seem to be crap. I put a new set of Dunlops on at 40K miles and they ran like silk with NO vibration for 100K miles. Don't blame the truck because of crappy tires.
My truck doesn't make any noise when it vibrates, it just vibrates. I really feel it in the seat, but hopefully, the problem has been fixed. Don't get me wrong, I'll be very happy if the problem was simply the tires, but it seemed to me that a tire problem would be noticable at other speeds...more consistent. I'm not blaming the truck, I love the truck, and I will enjoy it a lot more when it isn't vibrating. I'll be getting it from the dealer soon, so I'll see how it does.
I wasn't meaning to imply you were blaming the truck, it is just that tires are often the culprit. Many tire conditions do just show up at certain speeds and they often are just a vibration. If changing the tire fixes it and it starts again later, it is likely the same problem so don't mess around, take the truck to a good tire shop and get a good set of tires, it is worth it. And I'm not saying Good Year doesn't make some good tires (I have a set on my Ranger right now), it is just that the ones that are put on new vehicles are often junk. I've experienced this many times over the years with new vehicles and had many tire dealers tell me their own brand of tires on new vehciles are junk.
The OEM version of a tire is often different than the off-the-shelf version. The OEM version is produced to proprietary specs in order to increase CAFE ratings and also match the suspension.
Whenever you loose a factory tire replace the pair on the axle or strange handling problems can result. Rotate the tires as pairs, Don't cross rotate. Although Ford/GM or others and tire dealers say you can cross rotate your tires, -don't! A lot of little tire problems can be created by cross rotation. Remember the tire dealers are in business to sell tires, the more the merrier.

Chickenmantoo, I really do appreciate your feedback...sorry if I snapped. I got the truck back Friday and I immediately noticed the problem was gone. So, tires it was and I was indeed...wrong. Oh, well, that isn't the first time. They replaced the tires for free and I'm cruising around in my new Ranger with a big grin on my face. I called the dealership immediately after getting home and thanked them for the good work they did.
I have the exact same problem. I just bought a 2003 Ranger 3.O 2WD Supercab Edge edition and noticed the same symptoms. It has wrangler rt/s tires on it ans they all seem to have a few bulges and depressions on the sidewalls. What tires did you have? What did you replace them with to solve the problem?
I have a 01 Edge, 4.0, reg cab with 20,000 on it. I put on a set of Coopers and it is smooth as silk. I wanted to get a set of Michelins, but they were $200 more.
I just test drove a 2003 Ranger Edge Super Cab 3.0L 2wd auto trans and it had the same symptoms, shaking around 40-45 mph. It has goodyear wrangler R/Ts. I thought at First that it was just flat spots in the tires from sitting on the dealer lot. I'll take a closer look next time. I'm still interested in buying it and will test drive again.
