I have a 2000 3.0L 2WD truck with the Check Engine light on, and I have had the code pulled and it is a P0401. I know it is a low EGR flow condition, and I have read here about other years, and mention of cleaning ports. What ports are we talking about? Intake manifold Ports? ...in another post there was also reference to some test you could do (Engine on running ...I forget the acronym), but that post was about a 1987, is this test still applicable, or is the test different in some way? Is it usually the sensor? I pulled the EGR off and it seems clean and appears to function...
That code can be due to a clogged/stuck valve, vacuum problem, the VP solenoid or the DPFE sensor, just about the whole system. It seems to be commom to have the DPFE sensor go bad. Do you have any other codes?
The EGR valve does not seem to be stuck. When you asked if I have any other codes, I don't but should I be asking the guy that pulled them if there are secondary codes?
There are three types of codes, key on engine off (KOEO), key on engine running (KOER) and continuous. They should be serviced in this order, KOEO, KOER and then continuous. I suspect that you have a continuous code.
When I asked about other codes there are times when you may get a related code that helps pin down the problem.
The proper way to diagnosis the problem is by running the pinpoint tests. These tests will help determine the exact cause of the problem. Some people will skip this if the part is cheap and it's know "common" problem.
i'm new to this site. i just got a '99 xlt 4x4 and it has "check engine" light also. a friend scanned the code and it is p0401. after reading this message and looking at my haynes manual, i'm confused as to exactly where is the dpfe sensor is ? and while i'm on the subject, how much does one of these sensors cost and can they be cleaned ? any feedback is greatly appreciated.
thank you

It should be bolted to the front of the upper intake manifold, two vacuum lines and an electrical connector. Don't know what they cost. The failure is due to internal corrosion, can't be cleaned.
called the local ford dealership yesterday and the dpfe sensor is $69.21 , not as bad as i was expecting. and they have 7 in stock, which i thought was alittle strange since i live out in the sticks, i wouldn't think they would keep so many on hand unless they move pretty fast! my friend is going to scan for any more codes first, he didn't do the koer or the continouse scan yet. the picture in my haynes manual shows the sensor just behind the coilpack on the left side of the engine. it also tells how to check the reference voltage ,can you do this on '95 and later models or is the test for the early models? thanks
Like I said earlier, it is a common failure, I had mine replaced. When you get the KOER done let me know if you get any other codes and I can send you the pinpoint tests from my 2000 Ford manual.

just had the koer scan and had the same p0401 code. my friend also scanned while i was driving and had no more codes. his scanner has a capture feature that i'm going to try when the check engine light comes on again (cleared the code)tomorrow. what are the pinpoint test you are refering to? and thanks for your help!
I can send you the pinpoint tests from my 2000 Ford manual to find the exact cause of the code if you would like to do them before buying a sensor, email me your email address.
ken,
sorry for taking so long to thank you for the pinpoint test. i've been out of town alot for work and am just now getting around to working on my truck. i went ahead and got a dpfe sensor and put it on friday. so far i've put 60 miles on it and no check engine light. thanks again for all your help.
