My rear driveshaft is all screwed up on my 75 f250 4x4 with an np203. The guys at the shop want $500 bucks to fix it. Can't I get a brand new custom driveshaft for cheaper than that? Does anyone know of a good shop somewhere in Southern California?

I don't know what you've got in your area but around here there are 3 or so good driveline shops that will build a brand new one for about $150. You might also check the junk yards to see if you can get a used one unless you've made some mods that require a special driveline. OR ask the first shop if they offer a free jar of vaseline with that service. Sounds like they're trying to shaft you alright.
The driveshaft itself isn't messed up. The whole "double bubble" u-joint thingamajig is a pos and the both yokes are too. My dad talked to the mechanic, so I don't know all the details. It should still be less than $500 right? Would it would be cheaper than 500 just to upgrade to cv joints? Hmmmmmm. We just got the first rain of the year, and I can't even try my truck in the muck. I could probably still pull some chevys out in front wheel drive low.
Fishmann, why would you want an np203 more than a 205???? chain driven vs gear? I'd trade you if i had more time and money.
You mean a double carden? There shouldn't be a whole lot to go wrong with it other than U-joints, unless you actually snapped the joint. Can't you just replace all the U-joints? I think there are 3 with a double carden if I remember right.
I couldn't tell you the cost to go to CV's but they won't cost you $500 worth, I know that.
Yeah, I read about double cardons online but i wasn't really sure if they were the same thing. Theres some kind of thing between the ujoints in the double cardon assembly. He said theres a gear in it and one of the teeth broke off. Do you have any idea what that could be?
oooo ok....i gotcha, naw man you can rebuild it pretty easy and what you are looking at is usually referred to as a CV-joint....CV being constant velocity!
i suggest you thumb through here and see if what you need is here....don't necessarily have ot buy from here but gives you an idea of what's available to you

there are no teeth on the drive line other than the splines on the slip yoke if your counting them as teeth.
I got my 1310 cv rear driveline with all brand new spicer stuff for $250. I got my 1350 CV's for a little over 3 bills. go there and have them show you exactly whats wrong with the driveline.
Speaking of CV joints, Has anyone seen that new prototype or whatever for the D60s that someone out in Cali is working on? Its supossed to be able to take greater angles and not break as easily. It looks like its from NASA, too.

you talking about the giant birfield looking things?
150 to build a shaft, geeze it cost me more to get a long shaft shortened with a new slip yoke and u-joints and that was just stock replacements when i switched to a 205 case from a 208. Around here it cost 100 a foot to have a brand new driveshaft made and that is a cheap price to.
I buddy charged me $18 to shorten one in his shop... I thought that was expensive
get a service manual- as everyone else said, unless the yoke(s) are destroyed, you can probably get a brand new cv shaft from highangle driveline for unless than that.
