Sometimes i can feel my truck buck just a little going at highway speeds but not all the time...i was wondering how many fuel filters are there on theses 2.9 86 model trucks, i was told by a shop there is only one, but somewhere on this forum someone said there was two..who can give me the correct answere so i want be hunting for a ghost filter, and where are they.
I think what you read were people thinking there is a 2nd one on the frame back by the fuel tank. On my 88', if I remember correctly it is labeled in my repair manual as a vapor resivoir. Also, if you want to identify other filters...... there is a filter/pre-filter that looks like a sock on the pump in the tank that can get nasty over time.
Oh yea, and 87XLT is correct. Up on the frame rail near the firewall on the drivers side is the filter.
What i've heard is similar to what G2IC_Wraith is saying, but supposedly that black plastic bowl is a reservoir that the tank pump keeps full & it feeds the front pump.
Buy a new filter so you know what you are looking for, follow the directions in your Haynes manual for releaving fuel pressure & go for it.
I had a 86 Ranger with a 2.9 L and I found that there is two fuel filters on this truck. They are both on the frame rail on the drivers side. One of them is a filter that has two plastic clips on it holding the 2 lines on. The other filter is a cartridge type filter that is in a black filter housing. The bottam of this housing unscrews. I used a filter wrench to get it off. I found both filters at Napa auto parts. Hope this helps.
