What about foaming? A ford field service rep I spoke with said that there are no synthetic oils that he knew of that don't have a foaming problem. I asked about running it in my '05 and he said that if I added a de-foaming agent that it may be ok. The only problem with the de-foamer is that it only lasts 3600 miles or so, so if you are looking to go more miles between changes with synthetic forget it. His problem was that he has seen way too many injectors damaged or loss of power/rough idle by oil foaming. He said it is like a vapor lock from the old days.... After reading a lot of posts on FTE about oil I am getting vapor lock of the brain!
Ummm scary that your tech doesn't understand where the foaming of the injectors and crank is coming from. It's actually coming from the dealers overfilling the oil, that which on a grade causes the oil to be picked up by the crank. This is where the oil comes from. Secondly, I have personally never heard of a full synthetic foaming, not to mention the rare case any oil might foam is used properly. You really might want to consider another dealer, or at least another tech. Are you sure he was a diesel tech and not a parts changer? Just about everyone I know with PSD's and diesel techs at my dealer all use Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40. It is basically Mobil 1 for diesels, therefore it also meets the CI-4 just incase of problem. Between the three techs and myself, two of use still change at 5000 miles, one does a filter every 5000 miles, and the oil every 10000miles, and the third uses an oil guard system so he changes his every 20,000 miles. The newest diesel tech has only been a tech for 4 years, however the rest of the guys are 10 years or more.
Corey,
Thanks for the input. Just so you know, no he is not a dealer tech he is the field service rep from the Ford factory in Detroit so I would hope he is experienced.
