The mini-spool fits in place of the spider gears in an open differential. I guess it's possible you could weld yours, although I've only done it to opens.
you need to first, find a carrier for your 8.8 that is an "open" design.... the open carrier and the L/S carrier are different, and you need the open carrier to install the spool... the carriers run about $50 on ebay.... get that, then your spool. The spool replaces the spider gears in the carrier... after you do that, you are set.... fully locked 24/7. not good on tires if you use them on road a lot.
--Ryan..... anymore questions, don't be afraid to ask
Thanks... but I thought I had a Dana 44 in the rear and a Dana 35 up front...its a stock 91 Explorer, my Bronco comes with the Ford 8.8 rear and Dana 44 up front...Am I right?? My plans are to built up both the Bronco and the Explorer for offroad but keep the Bronco street legal to pull the Explored to its destination...I was thinking of welding or spooling both diffs on the Explorer and adding ARB Lockers to the Bronco but $$$ doesn't permit, what is the next best thing???
no no no, the 1st Generation Explorer and all explorers for the matter, come with the 31 spline Ford 8.8 Rear end, and the 28 Spline Hi Pinion D35 TTB front. as far as welding the front end, I would suggest not doin so, it will make turning a HUGE PITA!!! I would suggest that if you wanna lock the front, to go with the Powertrax Lock Right locker.... its always locked, except when you turn, and I believe they are only about $250 for the D35 application
