electrical connecter

hi all --

i dropped a rebuilt longblock 302 in my 90 bronco over the weekend and notice a couple of things i forgot in the rear of the engine like the plumbing and one cyclindrical electrical connector, which i can not find where it goes too!... anybody knows about this connector? The engine starts, first kick BTW! but getting erratic idle (up and down) 500 to 1000rpm.

You will just have to hunt for the electrical connection....maybe O2 sensor...or some sending unit.

As for the idle you probably have a vacuum leak and need to find it.

If it's speed density the idle fluctuation is not unusual. Drive the truck and it may go away. This assumes your O2 sensor is hooked up.

Find the missing connection, hook it up. Check everything again. Drive it some (20-30 minutes preferably including highway speeds) and then see if the idle is good.

If the connector is on the pass side with a single connector in the plug, then it is probably for the 02 sensor. That will also cause an erratic idle. It will plug into the sensor on the exhaust behind the head on the pass side.
My .02 cents

Knock sensor is at the rear of the engine in the top of the block between the top of the bell housing and the intake manifold. Connector is round and if you smack the engine witha tool while its running and the idle doesn't drop, thats the sensor you didn't reconnect. Just a thought. But thats the only other connection I can think of back there

yup...thats what i believe it is but couldn't find it. I took the phelum off to find it but no luck... feeling and looking within the area, it can't be to far off because it has a short leash. I will try again.

I did however figured out my erratic ldle problem. The ole ....IAC!!! Idle Air Control! My buddy showed me a trick and how we figured it out.

If you unbolt the top bolt (take off) and loosen the bottom bolt (keep on) from the IAC to the phelum. You are creating a vacuum leak. Start the engine with someone holding the IAC against the phelum, when the engines starts...by moving the IAC (letting air in and then closing) you will see a difference in the idle. By letting more air in...the idle became stable. I was unsure, so I bolted the IAC up again and pulled one of the smaller vacuum hose off to create a small vacuum leak and the erratic idle came back. At this point, it was pointing to the IAC. Next, I had a 2.9L phelum from a Ranger with a IAC, that worked. I know, Iknow they aren't the same. This is a test purpose. I bolted it on....the erratic idle went away! and now!! off to the dealership for a $122.00 part! ouch
