yesterday, I rolled down the tailgate window. as i lowered the tailgate I heard a loud bang inside it. and pieces of glass came out the bottom. WTF!!
I took the inside cover off, it seems the torsion spring inside let go, where it attaches it snapped and busted the window! now i need a new Tgate. and window!
This ever happen to anyone??
Oh yes, my friend, its not a pretty picture. Several of us have had the same thing happen. If the channel that holds the end of the torsion bar in place on the driver's side of the T-gate wasn't damaged or isn't rusted through, you may not need to replace the entire gate. it is possible to replace just the torsion bar. In fact there are a couple of threads going right now about this very dilema.
I never bothered replacing mine when it broke and smashed the window. Opinions will vary. Do what you think best. What I did do while I had the access panel open was grease the entire inside of the tailgate like a pig to prevent and rusting in the future.
Actually, I am in process of replacing mine as well. Before you put the new one in, Rhino line the inside of it or some similar bedliner coating. The elements can't corrode what they can't penetrate. I just got mine back from the local Rhino-linings shop completely weatherproofed on the inside and on the interior surface as well. Cost me $100 but I KNOW I won't be dealing with another rusted T-gate or a broken window/torsion bar etc. again. A small price to pay for not ever having to worry about spending 500-700 on a new window because the gate or the bar rusted through. Just make certain the drain holes are still clear when you are finished or you will have to listen to water slosh around in the gate after a heavy rain.
