My '04 F-350 6.0L 4x4 CC Longbed makes this god awful noise when I let off the throttle. I swear it's the turbo. It's been doing it since I drove off the dealer's lot on day one. It's sounds like a screendoor scraping the thershold. I've pulled off the intake tube and was able to move the turbo shaft approx. 1/16" up and down. The dealer told me the slop is taken up when the engine starts and oil is pumped into the turbo. He also said some make this noise and some don't. A heavy truck deisel mechanic told me there should not be any movement and it's probably the bearings in the turbo. The performance doesn't seem to be affected, except for the fuel mileage at 11-12 m.p.g.
Is there a solution for this problem?
I believe if I disect the turbo, I'll find the scraping source.
I had a similar problem but it was not the turbo. Are you sure it is coming from the turbo? My issue was a bad bearing in the idler pully on top of the motor.

When you let off the throttle? Is it when you accelerate hard and quickly let off the pedal or anytime you decelerate?
If it is accelerate hard and let off the pedal quickly, it is normal. There is no waste gate on the VGT so you are hearing excess boost escape back through the intake. Kind of a wapapapapa sound.
Tim... now, now... you shuld have used words like... "toot", "blowing wind", "passing gas" (or diesel in this case).... not "FART"... this is a family site Tim!!!
Don't make me take away your "SUPER DUPER MODERATOR" designation and ban you for a day or two!!!

...able to leap tall forums in a single bound...it's...Super Tim!
Turbo fart, or turbo bark. It is essentially the same thing. Heres the technical explanation.
When you are heavy on the throttle, your turbo is producing a lot of boost. The turbo wheel also spins very fast, up to 150,000 RPM. When you suddenly (keyword suddenly), let off the throttle, your engine does not need all of the excess air and has no where to go except out the same hole that it came in from. When the excess pressurized air goes back out of the intake, it has to force back against the turbo blades slowing the turbo wheel down very hard and quickly, thus making the noise tha you hear. Doing this a lot however can damage the turbo. That sudden slow down introduces forces on the turbo blades and shaft they are not really designed to handle. You can snap the shaft in two doing that too much.
OK here is my question on this>>> For over 10K miles mine NEVER EVER did this... then 1 day Im driving around and the tube falls off..IC tube falls off ther manifold..anyway now mine does it LOUDLY... and in fact in less I take off really really slowly it always does it...
Ford is claiming normal..Im claiming BS... It sounds like a total POFS when driving it.. Ford has it and is revieving it now.. Im 100% dissatisfied with the thing with this noise..Mine is sooo loud that with the radio on loudly you still hear it... People riding with me get the OH MY GOD were gonna break down look on their face..
Ill be honest...I was a GM convert...This was my first ford truck.. Reguardless of delaership or wherever I took it to it seems Ford does not have their stuff together on this truck period.
Ive had too many legit problems that they claimed were normal..Its not the delaers saying it...I go there they call ford with me standing there and get the same BS..
Honestly Ive reached the limit if they dont figure out how to do something with this thing I will be trading it in...I just hope I dont lose my butt doing it.
I just cant believe that for 40K they can not design something better... Between my belt squeels(still not fixed despite every revised belt etc being tried) the turbo noise, tubes blowing/falling off, driveline vibrations, and popping noises out of the 4wheel drive...I dont feel like I bought a 2004..I feel like I bought a 1987 with 400000 miles on it..
I agree with you Kenwood. I spent 40K and as a first-time deisel owner, I'm not happy. How does a company produce a vehicle and market it with these downfalls.
.
In addition, I also get a vibration (shuttering) upon take off. What's up with that?
Has anyone switched to an aftermarket turbo to eliminate the noise? It's expensive, but I'd rather do that then continue hearing turbo farts.
I don't have any of your problems you guys are having. They have a fix for the tube falling off, the vibration I have never had when taking off, but then again I have a stick. Kenwood, I hope your trade in on a different model truck works out for you. I have a friend with a Dodge that is on his fourth turbo, cracked block and he has 29,000 miles on it. I also have a friend with a chevy that has all kinds of issues that the dealer says is "normal". My advice, take it to a different dealer.

I agree with that heavy diesel mechanic that there should not be any feelable slop in th turbo bearings. I have replaced shaft bearings for slop like that. get another opinion at a differant dealer.
