Sorry all if this is a repost, I tried searching but can't for some reason.
Anyhow, I own a '95 Ranger XLT 4X4 with an Auto-trans. Recently, after parking it at work, I noticed the Kickdown lever (auto-trans shifter) would not come out of park. Upon inspection I noticed my brake light fuse also went out and was causing this because of something to do with the brake switch (safety feature). My problem is that every time I replace the fuse and drive the truck somewhere, sometime during my trip, the fuse burns out, I lose my brake lights, and the vehicle won't come out of park. Obviously this is electrical, but I'm wondering if anyone has had any similar problems and could point me in the right direction.
I'm not familiar with your year, but see if you have something called a BOO (brake on/off) switch and if you do, check it out with a meter to see if it's shorted. My Haynes manual says that it can cause rough engine problems if the switch is failed, and it may tie into other systems as well. I think it's located on the brake pedal lever.
I checked out the actual brake light housings and wires for any frays and the like. Finally, I traced a wire to the tow hitch and saw it had rubbed against the hitch and was grounding out on it. Easy fix to an annoying problem.
