My buddy is a little offended by your lack of engineering knowledge comments about him; just last year he swapped out the electric motor on his trolling motor with the 2 cycle off an old weed wacker. It's a little loud and smokey on the boat when he uses it but it sure enough does the job.

I'm impressed with the weed whacker swap. Sounds like excellent mosquito control as well as a warning tone for the fish.
Perhaps he can also make the applesauce lid fit on the jelly jar?
This is a non-starter. Save the money and go to school and save some more and buy a running, reliable car to take you to a real, paying job. Save lot's of money, buy a home, fully fund your 401k or other retirement plan, college fund for kids, pay up the life insurance, buy food, fix the dog and pave the driveway, then start saving money for a project like this. Or not.
Just to be clear....

May I suggest a more practical swap?
How about swapping in a 4.0L V6 out of an explorer / ranger? Get the whole thing, engine, trans, computer, wiring, all of it. It should bolt up to your motor mounts with a minimum of hassle. The performance will be well worth it.
Good luck on your project!

If you start with a 2.9L V6, you can swap in a 4.0L with a minimum of hassle. You can keep the motor mounts. You can keep the manual transmission. In the case of an automatic A4LD you can rebuild it to 4.0L specs, or use the trans that came with the 4.0.
Lets talk radiators. With a 302 you have to move the radiator, due to the length of the engine. With a 4.0L, you do not. Just get the one that came with the 4.0 and it'll swap right in.
As for electronics, if you get the 4.0L out of a wrecked explorer or ranger, the electronics should be good to go. Hook everything up the way it came stock and it'll work just fine.
