I have decided to go ahead and buy a winch for my bronco. I have looked around and decided on geting either a 12000# mile marker/warn or a 15000# warn. Both 12000# whinches have similar specs, but vastly diferent prices. Thats where all you great ppl here at FTE come in. I would like to know who has what, and what their experience has been. I am leaning towards the mile marker because of price, but I know all too well that you get what you pay for. So I would apreciate all of your input. TNX.
Have you heard of Megawinch? They sell a 9000 LB and 12000 LB winch. These winches are industrial grade winches and run a 100% duty cycle. The price for the 12000 LB winch is $1400 which is about the same as the warn 15000 LB winch. From what I have heard there is no comparison between this winch and the warn. The Megawinch uses a worm drive gear versus the weaker planetary gear system. The engineer who designed it used to work for Warn before he went into business for himself. He has a working knowledge of how the Warn winches are built (because he helped design them). And he decided to build an even stronger winch that was capable of 100% duty and was able to switch gears for faster spool times. This is the winch I am buying because I have heard such good things about them. Alot of our logging companies use them and even the whole fleet of idaho's county electric trucks has them. Check their website out at www.megawinch.com (I think thats the correct site)
After reading all the stink on Pirate I wouldn't touch a MileMarker electric 12K with a 10 foot pole. Apparently the 12K's use a different design than the rest and they're a nightmare. I've read a lot of mixed reviews about MegaWinch. Quite a few people complained about them (some liked them) which is enough to make me avoid their brand. The only complaint anyone ever has about Warn is their price . . . never quality.
If I was to go hydraulic I'd do a MM 12K but for electric it's going to be Warn. This isnt' an area you want to skimp in.

That would be the bottem line right there. You don't want to save money on a winch, because when you need it you NEED it to work. I'd rather be $200 bucks poorer than have to walk out of the hills because my econo winch took a dump on me.
Now im realy messed up. I have talked to megawinch and I liked the specs he gave me for the winch. Problem is he told me that the winch wouldnt fit in my buckstop bumper without doing some cutting on it. I dont like that idea at all. Their winch is rated pulling a static load not a rolling load and at 12v not 14.4 as he said warn rated their motors. From what Ive heard MM is out of the running. So now Im left with warn and megawinch. Warn will drop right in v/s megawinch and cutting my bumper or replacing my bumper. Im going to call buckstop tommorow and get some input from them. But I would still like to hear anything else anyone has to say.
if you wanna save a few bucks and still want the Warn name look into the Warn value line called Magnums....same exact winch just not as flashy and prolly produced in Malaysia or something!
Yea, I totally understand about the bumper being to narrow to fit the megawinch. I had a Warn 8274 mounted in a warn bumper and was hoping I could use it to mount my 12000 LB megawinch. However, its also too narrow. I never really liked the strength of the warn bumper anyway so today I just went down to the local salvage yard and bought a 10' piece of 10" channel iron in order to fabricate my own. I also bought some diamond plate for the top of the winch bumper. Once I am done the bumper will be really stout to say the least. And the best part about it is it will fit my 12,000 LB megawinch. I would say that the warn winch will be just fine. But, if you are looking for that little bit extra I would go with megawinch. I figure for the extra couple hundred bucks upgrading to an industrial series winch is a worth while idea.
I use a warn 9000 lb and have the used it for 7 years flawlessly. there is also a new winch out called T-max there was just a article in one of my 4 wheel mags. you might want to check them out they where a lot less than warn. Another thing to consider is don't go out wheelin by yourself always go with another rig that has a winch. I personally won't go out by myself. you break bad in the woods no winch will get you back home or to the trailer
