I'm new to this site, I was looking for a place that can help me on
some questions on my 1968 Ranger swb I just bought 3 weeks ago.
I was told the truck has a 390 in it, but I ran the vin number and
it said it came with a 360. The reason I questioned this is on the bottom
of the front fenders are 390 emblems, I have only seen one other truck
with similar emblems. Did these trucks come with them or did someone stick them there?
my ranger which is a 69 and has a 390 had the emblems on it, but i have seen some rangers with the emblems on it that only have 360,302 or even the inline six. its possible someone did a motor swap and put a 390 in it or possibly did nothing and put emblems on it. bot really sure how to tell the difference between the two they have the same block. maybe check and see if the motor has a vin on it. just a thought.
If you're lucky there should be a tag of some sort attached to the engine near the distributor/coil area that will tell you which engine it is.....However, I have yet to ever see one of these tags.....As far as telling them apart, they are the same engine but one has a longer stroke....There is a method for measuring the depth of your combustion chamber once you get a piston to the bottom of the stroke....I'm not sure what the actual depth measurement is for the 360 vs. the 390, but hopefully someone will let us know in this thread.
Thanks alot for the info. I'll check to see if there is a tag located by the
dist. I was considering doing a engine swap to a 429 but if this was the original
motor then I was going to keep it in there to make the truck all original.
