92 explorer. CV joint

A friend of mine suggested that I had a bad CV joint. How can I tell? If its true, is this something I can fix myself?

Thanks,
Pat

The only "CV" joint on my '92 is the double cardan u-joint on the front driveshaft at the transfer case. It's possible you have a double cardan "CV" joint on the rear driveshaft as well. All other joints are single cardan u-joints. They are usually easy to tell if they are bad. Grab the axle on both sides of the joint and wiggle the joint. The cross shouldn't move within the end caps. Note that, on a '92, the front drivetrain should be disconnected in 2H, and shouldn't be spinning, so any noises in 2H shouldn't be able to come from any of the front drivetrain u-joints.

Thanks, that sounds logical. The noise is something different then. It's comming from the front end, and sounds like two parts scraping together. Not constantly however, it pulses with the rotation of the wheels. Anyone have any suggestions?

If you still have the stock auto hubs, they are known to make all kinds of noises from trying to engage when they shouldn't.
Radius arm bushings are a common problem on the TTB suspension.
Wheel bearings can make noises when they are bad.
