When I turn the key over for some reason my starter solenoid smokes on the positive side. What could be causeing this??

loose or bad connection --- or a high resistance short.

could the bolt holding the starter wire on the block being lose have anything to do with it?

If the starter wire is grounded to the engine it is the cause. If it is connected to the copper bolt on the starter it should be tightened or your starter will not work correctly.
