Engines and Transmisions...
I have a 98 F150 extended cab and I love it but its only got a V6 in it...
My origonal plan was to buy a carbureted engine and get that put in but then I realised I have no clue about whats what...Could someone give me a list of the engines I could put in my truck without have to do stuff like rip out the ac,power steering and all kinds of stuff like that(We had to do that when we put a 400 small block in my friends S10). Im also wondering about transmisions...I have the stock 5speed that came with my truck but if I got a engine like im planing to would I have to upgrade and if so what to? Would I be better off with somthing like a 3 speed automatic or keeping the 5speed manual? Im not sure on any of this and id just like to hear what you guys think. Money isint really a problem for me since I havnt got out of high school yet and I just laned a pretty sweet job, my only expence is my truck and I love that thing so much id like to put every peny I make into it. In '98 you have a 4.2L V6, nothing from that engine is going to bolt up to any older carbed V8. If you want A/C, PS and all that you are going to need a complete donor truck, I'd say your best shot is an 87 F250 or F350 with a 351HO.... They were gas hogs, but could be built way up. The bellhousing on the transmission is also different, so you will need a new trans too... I would recomend a ZF 5 Speed. It's a 2 speed with a granny first.

It's virtually impossible to swap any thing into the existing tranny, with the possible exception being a 4.6L motor.
If you want to do a 351 swap, it will cost super mega bucks to work. You'd be much better off to try and swap in a 5.4L tranny combo.
