My 89' Aerostar XL has amber turn signals, does anyone know a
good way to wire in a 4 wire trailer harness? If I put in a jumper
wire to have brake lights and turn signals, then the amber and
red both work together on the van because they back-feed to
each other. So on the van if you step on the brake, the brake
light and amber turn signal both come on, and if you use the
turn signal the brake light also flashes. Will this cause problems
with my electrical system on the van? Last time I ran a jumper
wire, I ruined a switch before Tom F. could warn me not to.
Sounds like the same system on my mazda pickup. I had to wire in a control module that converts the separate brake/turn signal circuits into a single one. It cost a little about $20 at the auto parts store, but that was 15 years ago.
I had a 95 extended, now have a 96 extended. I too went the aftermarket module route for 4 wire trailer. The various catalogs seem to have a made to fit trailer wiring hookup for every Ford product except the Aerostars. Ranger wires don't fit. It's been working for 6 years now, never a problem. 'Wired it in front of the left tail light assembly, easy access.
