Nice thread ..I have been debating this also within my head ...
being a Chicago Fire fan (soccer) ... has Major League Soccer signed on with either ?
No.
Right now the sports I can come up with that are on satellite radio:
MLB - XM
NASCAR - XM
NFL - Sirius
NHL (when they aren't having a labor squabble) - Sirius
College Sports - Both since schools/conferences are free to make their own deals.
Other motorsports like IRL, CART, etc are not on either. NBA is not on satellite radio at present though it's highly likely XM is working on getting the rights to that.
My XM 2 year pre-pay runs out in August 2005. I'll not be renewing it as the king of all media begins his stay on Sirius in January 2006. I got the XM because I used to have a 2 hour commute to/from work. Now it takes four minutes and I haven't turned the thing on in several weeks. I was very impressed with the playlist when I first got the thing. But after listening to it for a year it seems to me that that they only play a couple songs by each performer. That gets pretty boring after awhile. Granted, it's much better than FM just for the lack of commercials alone. But I've taken to burning mix CD's that I make by randomly grabbing tracks from my library. The only problem with that is the limited size of the library. It would be nice if, rather than having playlists you can generate, you could remove the channels you would never listen to. I don't think I'll ever have a need to dial up some rap in my truck, and the kids channels could go too. I'm not sorry I invested the $ in it, but I do wish I had looked into the programming a little closer before I bought it. I was impressed with the nascar channel, but now that Sirius has the NFL I would trade up in an instant. As for the XM Roady and FM modulator in my truck... It'll be for sale in about 8 months or so.
Sirus is coming out with video streaming for those of you who have lcd screens and it will cost around $3.00 more a month. A big plus over XM. I have both systems through a alpine unit and I tend to listen more to Sirus.

If the LCD thing is true that will kick ***, no more black screen on my player
I got a chance to test an early XM receiver on a cross country trip just after they went on the air. It was like crack cocaine....I was instantly hooked. I bought my own unit about 48 hours after I gave the demo back to the XM guys. I have a few favorite music stations and I listen to CNN and CNBC a lot (I'm a financial journalist).
I'm sure Sirius has the same effect on people who try it. No matter where you are you get your stations and it always sounds great. But I have no desire to listen to Howard Stern so I don't feel driven to try Sirius.
But one more great thing about XM: the non-stop traffic reports for the 15 or so largest markets. There's nothing worse that waiting ten minutes for the next "on the eights" traffic report on broadcast radio and missing it...or worse...they don't mention YOUR route.

It's been a while since there was traffic in this thread. I just wanted to say that it has now been a couple months and I haven't turned the XM on. I discussed with the wife about moving it to her Explorer, and she wants to give it a try. It goes tomorrow, and I'm one step closer to eh_eh_eh. I really believe the repeating playlist, and limited number of songs per artist is what makes it get old after a while. Or I guess I just burned out on it.
I can't argue that I seem to hear the same songs a litte too frequently on especially chanel 46 (the classic rock hits style channel) but have learned to appreciate a couple of others that help mix it up. I am listening to about 50% news...so that makes a difference too. But driving late at night I listen to XM old time radio classic shows....they are fun for me.
But it's all in the ear of the individual listener...it's gotta work for that person.
It goes tomorrow, and I'm one step closer to eh_eh_eh.
psy
Now this made me laugh! Very funny reference! I see you are a frequent listener like my wife and I. Not everyone here will get the eh_eh_eh reference.....
I have the Kenwood 6500 touchscreen with Navigation and Music Keg. I have about 5000 songs loaded in the keg, but spend most of my time listening to Sirius. I had XM before Sirius became mainstream and I can tell you in my humble opinion the the DJ's and programming at Sirius are better. The NFL is great during the season, and yes XM does have MLB and others, but as stated before in this forum, the programming seems to be suffering (perhaps there are trying to recoup all the money they paid MLB or the lost subscription base to Sirius?) Anyway, I really like Sirius and similar XM, you can log on to their website if your a subscriber and listen to Sirius via the internet wherever you are. My 2¢
I've had Sirius for about a month now and really enjoy it. Personally, I like the content better, but that is different for everybody. You won't be sorry either way...I never listen to AM/FM anymore. Listening to music without commercials is beautiful - I never realized how much I hated it until I got the Sirius. Do what others have mentioned, get the 3 day trial of each, find a station or five that you like the best and see which one keeps you interested the longest. I have the Audiovox PNP3 and think it's a great unit. I'll be getting the home dock before too long so I can bring it inside with me. I also personally like the portable units for that reason as well.
