i have a 92 ranger and i finally blew the engine up!! it had 275,000 miles on it and it was burning oil and had some other problems, but i was racing a guy over the harbor bridge today in corpus christi texas and i had it in 2nd gear just floored!! right when i got to the top, my engine just locked up BOOM and my back tires locked up too. i just pushed the clutch quick and had enough momentum to crest the to and roll down the other side "thank god" but now its blown, it took me 3 years to blow it up! i'd say that its a good engine for the abuse i put it through. but anyways, im thinking about taking the 3.0 out of it and putting some kind of diesel engine in it. like a 4-cylinder cummins. i think it would be bad *** to have a hopped up diesel ranger, i am a good mechanic on gas or diesel engines. and am a good fabricator also. i was sondering if anyone has ever done an engine swap in a ranger? maybe to a turbocharged gas engine or something??? has anyone ever ut a diesel in one?? thanks for your input. any positive input is good input.
Ford actually made a diesel powered Ranger, from 84 or 85 to 87. It was a 2.3 Turbo Diesel from Mitsubishi. I don't think they ever made very many. My dad has owed two so far. One was a 4x4 and the others a 2wd. They are good engines, but don't like getting hot (200 degrees) We've cracked a couple heads from getting it too hot. Parts are made of gold (or thats what the price would indicate) If I remember right, piston were around $200 CDN for .020 bore. They actually had decent power though. My old 2.9V6 had trouble pulling away at 40km in 3rd gear, 60 in 4th. Only once dad shifted could I get ahead. Anyway, hope this helps, or gave you some neat facts at least.
check this stuff out..., i went to the ranger statoin.com. and they had a 2.3 liter 4-banger with a cummins 5.9 turbo off a dodge pickup on it!!! i thought surely it would be too big!!!, but nope, the thing runs 22 psi of boost and 12's in the quarter!! bone stock 2.3 i cannot get over it!! i'm gettin one!!the turbo will bolt right up, you have to make a new alternator bracket for it tho, who needs an alternator when you got a battery charger!!!!! lol, or just a 5 horse broggs in the back with an alternator hooked u to it. if a cummins turbo will work for it, a briggs will work for the alternator!!! where do you get a 2.3 turbo motor?? out of the old t-birds or soemthing?
thanks for the reply about the diesel rangers. werent the rangers of the 80's full sized pickups???? i thought they were, what did that diesel get??? 30 mpg!! man, that sounds pretty neat too! thanks a lot
The Ranger package was in the F-trucks until the Ranger as we know it came around. Those TD engines got good mileage, but the hp numbers were almost as low. I'll take a 2.3 gasser for now since diesel costs more now and I can semi-safely get outta' harms way with 98 ponies. Good luck finding parts now for those Mitsu engines. :insert laugh here:
That 3.9L Cummins = 700 lb's of weight under the hood. Not a great highway engine, either, but I think some delivery trucks use 'em (probably bought 'em for lower price more than anything, though).
Saw that page at trs that referred to a site with an Exploder with that 3.9L. Don't remember the specifics, but nothing linked to contact that guy, so I don't know how that things drives...
The smaller Rangers came out in 1983, just so you know. The diesel gets greats mileage (close to 50), makes more horsepower than the gasser. (round 110 in ours, but its a fresh rebuild - 20,000 km, give or take a bit) My little 1.5L VW diesel almost made similar numbers to the 2.3 gas. I assume that the gas is more responsive, because of turbo lag in the diesel. I don't know where you are Alfred, but diesel is cheaper here (Manitoba), by around 7 cents/litre.
im from the US, so i really have no idea what 50 kilometers er liter is..?? im sorry, and i dont know how far 20,000 km is and i dunno how much 7 of yuor cents equals to us dollars. but i guess i shouldn't have asked you how good the gas milege is either.. lol im sorry, but diesel is about 15 cents more expensive right now. here in the US and john kerry is going to raise gas prices 50 cents a gallon, if he makes president, someone is going to do the US a favor and "get rid" of that man, or i would hope so
I meant 50mpg, 20,000 km is around 12,500 miles (1.61km per 1 mile), and $1CDN is about $.82US. Up here, mileage is figured in litres per 100km. Now that's confusing! Even though we use the metric system, I still think in MPH & MPG, pounds etc. Not many 21 year olds due that anymore. I don't know what you pay for gas, but here is around $3US a gallon, give or take a bit due to my number crunching abilites. (or lack there of)
3.00 a gallon!!!!!!!!!!, thats a lot, it may be a bit high. umm, man, i guess its allright if you get 50 mpg, but road diesel is 2.00-2.05 here in texas and i can get red diesel for 1.50 a gallon pretty easy. i got an old idi ford diesel and it gets about 12 mpg. it likes burning that red stuff better anyways. i think its because of the sulfer, but it runs better and is easier on my pocket. i have been pulled over by the dps before and they didnt want to check my tanks... thats their fault if they dont catch me running it!!! to hell with uncle sam!!. what do you mean by "not many 21 year olds think like that any more" i didnt understand. did ya'll used to run our system too?? or did you come from us and move up there? that would be confusing. do ya'll drive on the left side of the orad too??? remember, im from texas, i dont know these things.

Just most Canadian people my age use the metric system, but I prefer MPH, stuff like that. 3.00US for a gallon for gas (after converting litres to gallons and CDN dollars to US), diesel I think is somewhat cheaper, but I don't know the exact price. I've been here all my life, and probly stay here.30 years ago we used the Imperial system, but switched for some reason, not a clue why. We drive on the same side of the road as you do.

The Ranger in Australia comes with 2 choices of engines. You can get the 4 cyl gas or the 4 cyl diesel.. Go Here to see a ford site in Australia: http://www.ford.com.au/home/home.aspThey have some choices we don't have.

I don't believe they ever made turbocharged gas rangers, unless a couple slipped through with the turbo 2.3 from the Mustang, but I doubt that. Up here we drive on the same side as you do.
