i have got a 79 4x4 with a 400m in it i dont know forr sure if the motor woks or not i traded the truck for an old camper we had i wanted it for the parts off of it but now am thinking about maken her a show truck or a play toy .
i ahve heard alot of negatives about the 400m .i would realy like to have a 460 in it but if i can get the 400m running and soforth i may just keep it
could you folks give me the good and bad sides of the 400m
i cant seem to post pics here or i would show you how ruff the motor looks
First off you have a 400 no "M" the letter designations were only used with the different 351 engines.
The 400 is a torque engine. It would be good for snow plowing. It is capable of getting better fuel mileage than the 460. The 460 has to be geared real high, higher than most of the available HD rear axles to get good mileage just because of all those cubes turning over. The 400 has a long rod and a long stroke that works for torque but it is not a high revving engine. People have built them to run 800HP but that is not something you can run on the street. If the motor runs and does not rattle or smoke too bad it may run for years.
Just for some motivation....$1300 rebuild on my 79 w/ 400 vs $2700 rebuild on a 78 w/ 460. The 400's 4x4, the 460 is 4x2....I can outrun, the 460 whenever i want. A 400 is a good motor to wake up. If you want to stick with it, thats what i would recommend. Can be a great motor.
