First off you have a 400 no "M" the letter designations were only used with the different 351 engines.

The 400 is a torque engine. It would be good for snow plowing. It is capable of getting better fuel mileage than the 460. The 460 has to be geared real high, higher than most of the available HD rear axles to get good mileage just because of all those cubes turning over. The 400 has a long rod and a long stroke that works for torque but it is not a high revving engine. People have built them to run 800HP but that is not something you can run on the street. If the motor runs and does not rattle or smoke too bad it may run for years.

Good luck with it!

The cons are the way the engine was detuned from the factory to meet emisions standards. The pros are there is any where from a very little to a whole lot that can be done to wake up this sleeping giant. Check out these for starters. http://home.earthlink.net/~bubbaf250/index.html

Just for some motivation....$1300 rebuild on my 79 w/ 400 vs $2700 rebuild on a 78 w/ 460. The 400's 4x4, the 460 is 4x2....I can outrun, the 460 whenever i want. A 400 is a good motor to wake up. If you want to stick with it, thats what i would recommend. Can be a great motor.
