2000 Ranger Knocks

Hello,

I've got a 2000 ranger with the 2.3 liter 4 cylinder, and ever since I got the truck (I got it a bit under a year ago, and it had 5000 miles on it--18000 miles on it now), its always knocked on regular gas. I could be running down the road at 45 mph, or 70 mph, and I will hear a constant, consistent rapping. It basically knocks anytime I'm running relatively high rpms-like when I run 70 mph in 5th gear.

So I upgraded to 89 octane, and it basically stops, occasionally there's a stray knock. I took it to my dealer (still under warrantee), and he told me that there's not much else I can do other than upgrade fuels.

anybody else have this problem with a ranger and any ideas to let me go back to using cheaper gas?

thanks,
hank

Welcome to FTE!

I'm sorry, but I beleive that you really have no other choice than to run the higher octane. I think that you'll find that alot of other ranger owners with the combination that you have would tell you the same thing.

I could be wrong, but doesn't your owners manual say to use at least 89 octane?

Good Luck!

yeah, I double-checked the owners manual, and it recommends 87.
Oh well...

I have a 2000 Ranger w/ a 2.5L. I wasn't aware that FORD offered the 2.3L and 2.5L that year.

Hmmm

You'll want to make sure your DPFE valve has been replaced. You are supposed to have a 5/50000 warranty on your emissions parts. i.e. Ford should replace it for free. If the valve is the aLLUMINUM one chances are it has gone bad. When I got mine the parts guy said the original alluminum ones go BAD. When I replaced my valve, I noticed LESS pinging. I need to do my plugs again now because driving it with the pinging probably has effected my plugs. WEll SEE.
