Hi...My 98 Ranger makes this metallic clank sound when I let out the clutch in first gear and the dealer said it is normal. I don't really believe them but what can you do until something breaks? It has done this since I bought it brand new. I guess I'll live with it.
My 98 also makes a clunk when starting out and also often when stopping. The sound is definitely coming from the left front and has been verified by independant observers. I've had it checked out numerous times by more than one mechanic and have spent hours underneath trying to see what might be loose. After 1 1/2 years I still haven't found anything - drives me crazy but I guess until something breaks I'll just turn up the music!
this problem is on my buddies Mustang. After a haul on the back of a trailer with the rear tire on the ground for 1 1/2 hours it became noticeable, I think its the diff spider gears inside, its an apparent noise only at start-up speeds.
I have a 85 Ranger and I had the same problem. It lasted for about 6 months. Then I had to replace the transmission, transfer case, and the clutch. My advice is to take to a respectable transmission place and have them check it out before it gets any worse.
