Need some input on a Superduty

I currently have a 1990 F-250 w/ a 351. It has a 4 inch lift, 35 inch tires, etc....nice setup, and i like the power it gives me and the torque. I love the 3/4 ton too.

I have been looking at the new 05 superdutys and also past years, like 00-03. I really like the diesel. i have never owned a diesel before so i don't really know what to look for when looking for a "good diesel truck" but i have seen on hear and just from others that the 6.0L powerstroke seems to be a great engine. What is the mileage that one could expect? I am just getting interest now, maybe next summer look into getting something newer. If i were to get one, i'd like to lift it 4-6" and get either 35"-37" tires. Are there any driveshaft mods i would need to do?

Are the powerstrokes pretty reliable and how long could i expect one to last? I have looked at the banks exhaust upgrades etc. Are those pretty good systems? What other exhaust and air intake mods are there out there for a diesel?

I'm new to the diesel world and would like to know more so i can get a good base before i go out and look like a fool and get coaxed into something.

Thanks for the tips and time reading this

There isn't really much to look for if you're in the market for a Ford diesel. Maybe stay clear of "unproven" early 6.0s (2003 MY) since they were prone to problems. Make sure the truck isn't belching smoke, idling rough, bucking, etc. As with any engine, look for fluid leaks and signs of repairs. But otherwise, either you get a diesel or you don't. It all just depends on what you want to do your truck, really.

There are lots of good reasons to get the 6.0L. Power and torque are two good ones. Longevity is another good reason. Since the thing is almost completely computerized, it's relatively maintenance-free. Filters and fluids are about all you need to deal with. You'll even get good fuel economy to boot.

It would not be unreasonable to expect to get 300k out of a well-cared-for 6.0L.

Can't help with the mods as I don't have experience with them, but there's lots of folks here that'll steer you right in that department, I'm sure. Just keep reading FTE and you'll learn a lot about the 6.0L.

Good luck with your truck.
