My alternatory is not putting out enough power to keep my truck running so i need to replace it. Now many Amps should i get? I have a campers special and the stock on back in 67 was 55 amps. Is that big enough?
I recently picked up a rebuilt alternator and the only listing for it was 67 amps or so. I asked if there was a higher amp and was told that's all the book shows for a 71. I always like to get the biggest amp option I can get without having one custom built. 55 Amps sounds a bit low to me but that all depends on what you're running, ie. aux. lights, halogen headlights, CB radio, custom stereo, winch...
Yes, only one wire. That is why they call it a one-wire. The wire runs directly from the +post on the alt to the hot side of the solinoid. The alt has to be converted over to allow this. Either you can do it or buy a one-wire alt from the auto parts store.
I have a 100 amp 1-wire alt sitting on the shelf, because I wasn't sure how to hook it up. So you run wire from alt to hot side of solenoid? What did you do with the wires that were unplugged from the regulator? I have a '72.
I would just tape off the wires so you can go back to the old setup. Just hook the wire like you said. You have to rev the engine to get the 1 wire alt to start charging. I still prefer the stock setup, easy to check and cheap to repair.
You will need to unplug the charging harness, both the three prong and two prong plugs. Might as well put the old charging harness and regulator away on a shelf somewhere.
As far as the wiring. I took the plug with the three wires and ran them all to the hot side of the soleniod. The plug with the two wires. The green one leave dead and the yellow one goes to your horn. Run a heavy guage wire from the hot side of the solenoid to the one post on the back of the ONE-WIRE alt. Also for safe measure ground the alt with the a heavy gauge wire.
