I have an 85 F150 with the 302 FI, auto tranny 4x4. When i Put the gas all the way to the floor, it will rev up fine, then all of a sudden it will just completely die, like there is no gas in it, then if i just keep the pedal to the floor, the truck will rev down, and once it gets past a certain point (like 2k) it will rev up, then die, then rev up then die, If i let off the gas, and then just lightly push it, it will be fine. Oh, and this is only when i'm driving, if i put it in park and rev it, i can hold it at like 4k and it will rev fine. I'm thinking maybe a clogged fuel filter or somthing, but that doesnt explain why it will rev fine in park. Anyone have any Ideas?
It definatly is the fuel filter. There are two on the rail one is metal and the other is a black platic canister right under the drivers door on the frame rail. I spent three grand replacing stuff on my motor until we found it was this 5$ fuel filter.
Yep its the fuel filter, the reason why it can rev high when in park is because there is no load on the engine and thus less fuel is needed. Also you will need a special plastic thingy to take off the filter, can't remember what its called but it can be bought at your local parts store.
If you have a big strap wrench, or even an oil filter wrench, you can get that filter in the selector valve off without buying a special tool.
Be careful when putting it back on. It is real easy to pinch the gasket and ruin it. A light coating of grease will help keep it in place and avoid this.
Just in case the filters don't do it, then look at your fuel pump/pumps. What you are describing is definitely fuel starvation.
I have the special tool needed, since this truck has been sitting for a couple of years, i imagine that there is all kinds of sludge in the fuel tank that drained down and clogged up the filter. I'll hopefully get to replacing it tonight. Oh, by the way, both fuel tanks have holes in them. I suppose this added to the amount of moisture and crud that got in there. My uncle built a trailer out of a bed for a f150 with the dual tanks, he said that i could just have the tanks if i wanted. I'll probalby get those, clean them up, undercoat them, and install them before the new fuel filter. How long do you think i can drive with that thing clogged up? Am i going to wreck somthing? And what do you guys/gals reccomend for cleaning the "new" used fuel tanks out that i'll be getting?
