I have a 86 Ford 4x4 and recently replaced the 351w ho with the same size engine. But now for some reason, well the starter drags some times which i had the same problem before when i first got the truck. But only sometimes, anyway i burnt up the silenoid and fried a couple fuseable link wires that go to the silenoid.Well i replaced the silenoid and wires and ended up burning the new silenoid up.The ignition stuck on when this happened.Well I had my starter tested and its fine ?! Alternators good and batterys old but ok.Any ideas that could be causing the problem? Any help with this would greatly be appreciated!
Replace all the battery cables with good heavy duty ones . I also ran a separate ground from the frame to the engine block replaced the " Good Starter" according to advance autos tester. That when hot drew too many amps replaced solenoid cleaned ground behind first cleaned or replace all connectors the attached to the solenoid and have not had another problem
Hope this helps By the way I have a 1986 F150 302 EFI 7000 miles on new 347 stroker motor and new B&M c-6 transmission passes everything but the gas station geez!
I would check your cables. If they are old and have some corrosion then they could be screwed. If you are unsure, just replace them. Next thing would be the starter. Good luck!
Flywheel? check it if its bad that would definatly be a cause of your problem. OR
Check the solenoid. Its by the coffe can looking thing. If it's dirty or coroded that definatly is your problem.
I know that a dirty (aka mud) will cause a starter to do this. In my 81 F-250 mudder, i neglected to clean the starter the whole season and a few weeks after the mud bogg season ended the start up and quicl (it would drag and hang up every now and then) anyway it was like a bomb went of inside the starter, so a good cleaning would help it if you get the chance to take it off.
