I have been having problems with my directionals, when i turn them on (right or left turn), they sometimes blink really fast but other times they blink like they should. i think it might be in the switch because if i move the switch about half way without it locking into place it seems to work fine. At times it will blink fast but then it will blink normal on it own. has anyone had this problem before. Thank you shawn
I have the same problem. Already tried the flasher, blubs, sockets. So today I took apart steering column cover to get the switch out which is one assembly held in by two star screws. But couldn;t get top cover off of steering column.
Anyone know who to get the cover off the iginition/keyhole or does the whole thing come out to remove the cover?
Dealer wanted 90 dollars plus for new multifunction switch. Took mine off and opened it up. Held together with 5 smaller star screws. Most of the copper contacts looked green ( water?) as if lubricant liquified. Cleaned out unit completely and reassembled. A little tricky getting back together. There is one spring that seems to go nowhere. I must have put back together right cause it works great. Saved 90 bucks.. thats always cool.
Thank You T2, I didnt think of ripping the switch apart. So i did that. I had the same problem with the green gunk inside. i cleaned her up and it works great. I understand what you mean by being tricky to put back together. It saved me $94 and it only took about an hour to do. Thank You again. Shawn
I had the dirty contacts as well - afraid springs would fly everywhere if I took it apart - so I gave it a SERIOUS wd40 shower and bath, working all the switches over and over. Seems to be working fine.
So if you are timid like me, you can try the wd40 first.
I posted this same prob. in the General Automotive on the 24th. Got one reply. Apparently this "is" common. Another one of Ford's "better ideas". Take no offense, I prefer Ford over others.
My 97 Mercury left turn signal sometimes flashes fast like a bulb is out. But it's not. If you switch it slowly it works good. but just filp the lever down quickly it starts the fast flashing. Is the flasher common to both rt. and left. I suspect there is a problem in the switch in the column. Anyone have experence with this? The switch should be pretty common with FOMOCO.
