Could it be no one has the training to set the gear clearances up?

What gives. Is that better than just doing the gears?

How difficult is it and what problems would be associated with it?

Thanks in advance---Bob
ExpyBob,

The diagnosis portion of the invoice stated the noise was from abnormal wear.

The invoice after the repair on mine stated the "Rear DIFF assembly" was replaced. I did not ask the exact details of the repair, but I assume the whole diff was replaced. Maybe it's just easier, I only know the basics but I would take the whole assembly rather than fixing just a portion.

It literally took 1/2 a day for it to be ready.

That's not bad. I just hope the new ones have the "fix" and the noise doesn't come back.

How is yours sounding?

Thanks for the reply---Bob

My diff was replaced about 6 months ago at 22,000 miles. Now at 30,000 the noise is back!!!. Also when I am slowing down there is an additonal noise which sounds transmission related, difficult to describe but it sounds it is deeper pitch noise and slows down as the car comes to a halt.

The other thing I noticed after replacing of the diff is that there is now a vibration through the vehicle that was not their before. I can feel this in the seat and steering wheel when accelerating through the speed range 0 - 40 mph. It is not a wheel balance problem as the vibration is very fine

Oh please not vibration problems.

That's one thing this car doesn't have no matter how fast you go.

I'd rather have the whine.

More Complaining From Me

I have my 04 Expedition in the shop right now! They said they are replacing the pumpkin to correct the noise I hear. I hope that fixes the problem. If this many people are having problems, then Ford should do something about it. I have seen many websites that people are complaining about this, so it is not just a one time thing. What I really love is the service departments that blame it on something else and say that is the noise level is not higher than the AC noise it does not have to be fixed. And then you people believe that. Too Funny. Well, we will see if my vehicle is fixed this afternoon. By the way, I only have 1100 miles on mine when I started hearing the noise. What about the rest of you? When did you hear the noise?

Mine goes in tonight. They said maybe two days but hoping for onr.

They are replacing the pumpkin too. It was back ordered and sent right from the vendor--not Ford.

hope this takes care of it. I heard some complaints about vibration after it was done. I'm hoping it was unrelated to the repair since mine runs smooth right through 100MPH.

How long did this job take for those that had it done?

How did it turn out overall?

My dealer said they had 3 other '04s that had the same complaints as I did. So the dealer said they had a pumpkin in stock. I hope it was a ford part as you said they had to get an aftermarket one. What happens if they put a different one in and you have more problems, is Ford going to cover it? I would check, and since your post, I am checking right now about mine.

I think you misunderstood me. Ford buys their "pumpkins" from a vendor just like they do their seats, radios (visteon) and many other parts.

Since this is a problem the Ford warehouse is back-ordered so to save time and money they ship directly from their vendor to the dealer rather than vendor to warehouse then to dealer.

It's the exact same part.

By the way, it took 5 hours and is running perfectly silent and vibration free. I forgot how quiet the truck used to be.

Koodos to my dealer and his techs.

Axle Whine

Can someone give me a detailed description of the sound. I have a faint whine at around 50MPH, but am not sure if it is the same issue many of you have had. Is the noise really loud??

As time went by mine got louder.

It's a whine that comes from the rear.

It finally got loud enough to hear with the radio and air con on.

Mine peaked at 54MPH under slight load to maintain speed.

My 04 EB has 18K and this makes the third time I bring it in for the same whining problem. Today the "field engineer" checked it out and said that the noise was normal however if it gets louder bring it back in towards the latter part of December at which time they will have a service bulletin out. Sounds like more jive to me. I've already had the rear end and drive shaft replaced. Any suggestions?

Took my wifes 03 Expy in yesterday, when at a stop and taking off and turning left or right we were getting a Grinding noise from the rearend. When I called yester day it was still on the rack with the rearend apart.
