I am trying to replace the stock radio in my 2000 Ford Expedition XLT 4.6L 4X4. Most of what I've found indicates that the stock radio is 1.5 DIN; however, it appears that 1.5 DIN is approximately 7 3/4" x 3 1/4"... The stock radio measures 1/2" narrower and 1/2" taller.
My question -
Does anyone know of a source (online store or otherwise) that sells a replacement dash bezel that surrounds the radio and comes with different size openings for the radio?
For example, I purchased a JVC KW-XC777, which is supposed to be a double DIN unit; however, while the height works just about okay (maybe not quite tall enough), but it's definitely too narrow (maybe by about 1/2")...
I've seen pictures of custom jobs with navigation screens that look stock but aren't, and I've seen vendors that offer to make custom dash bezels for customers with the money; what I'm looking for is a vendor that says "Oh! You have a 2000 Expedition and you want to install a radio that size? Here you go!"
The problem with the "here you go" hope is that the cavity for the radio in 1997-2002 Expys decreases from double DIN to single din about halfway back. This is to accomodate a dash brace crowding the upper rear of the cavity. I've heard that some cut away the brace to fit double DIN setups. The closest you'll find to "here you go" is to exchange your head unit for a single DIN and buying an installation kit from Scosche or Metra that contains an opening for single DIN and a pocket or small cubbyhole. If the kit is mounted so that the cubbyhole is above the radio, it's pretty much cut-and-paste. The instructions for the kit may claim that the pocket can be mounted either above or below the headunit. They're wrong. The pocket has to be above the headunit.
I just installed a single DIN Alpine in my 1999 Expy using a Metra kit.
Alas, it is sad but true; the cavity does decrease towards the back. I did have to remove the brace to fit a stock Ford CD/Cassette/Stereo (full height the entire depth of the radio). Ultimately I was hoping to go with an aftermarket head unit and not have to purchase an installation kit with the pocket. It appears, however, that this is not to be.
