Gas Leak

I have an F-150, 302 5L with two fuel tanks. The back tank is rusted and not used. The front tank was replaced about three years ago. When I start the engine it runs fine (either in neutral or while driving) After about 3 or 4 minutes gas starts to leak on the ground from around the back tank area. If I am driving, the engine sputters like it is not getting enough gas (of course the puddle on the ground may have something to do with it). I cannot see where the leak is coming from. What should I suspect first.

I would first suspect a gas line from somewhere. If it is leaking gas then the fuel pressure is not up and the engine will not run right.

Beast 12: Thank you for the reply. If it is a gas line, why does it take a few minutes for the leak to begin. If I drive the truck and go through the gears, it runs fine (and does not leak) until about three or four minutes down the road. Then the engine becomes starved for gas and I can barely keep it running. thenerd

It sounds like you have a bad tank valve. It sends the extra gas to the back tank instead of the tank that you use. Check if the back tank is full. there was a recall on this problem. Good Luck
