Flat paint job --- how?

I have seen some street rods painted flat black and would like to do it too. I have painted some cars in the past and used arcrilic enamal with good results. I was wondering what type of paint to use for a durable flat black finish and how to care for the finish as car wax and oils will stain flat paint. Any tips would be appreciated as well.

Thanks,
Clayton

A lot of the guys use John Deere Blitz Black paint to get that flat black retro look. It is available at your local John Deere dealer (usually). If you go to the paint and body threads on hotrodders.com there a few big threads on it with some good pics.

You can also use the same type of acrylic enamel you've alwasys used, and add a flattening agent to it. Adding different amounts adjusts the degree of flatness. Comes in quart cans - don't remember the brand name, there are probably several - your jobber should be able to help!

I asked the same question at my local Hopkins & Kip. I was looking for a primer that would hold up for the winter, or longer, until I could get around to repairing the rest of the trucks woes. The paint shop guys suggested a 2-part epoxy primer from PPG (MP170, paint & MP175, hardner), available in flat gray or flat black. They said it was all the rage for the retro-hot rod guys. It's more a sealer than a primer and actually has a touch of a sheen to it. They said it would seal and protect from rust many times better than standard primer, but it goes on in a thin coat so the surface to be painted has to be perfect (or sanded and re-applied several times. I opted for the gray, because my final color will eventually be silver, (and because the black costs 20% more??). For me, it did what it was supposed to and stayed fresh looking for 9 months and counting with no sign of rust. There was a bit of fading, but then the truck was parked outside 99.9% of the time.

Tried flat black both ways

We shot the truck with a base coat and killed the clear, gave a really nice flat black but took forever to dry and we ended up with finger prints all over. Gave it a sand and shot acrylic and flattened it. Worked great, cleaning is just a hose down. Never wax it and a little soap and water gets off finger marks. I love it. Good luck with yours.

John.
