flat black paint?
flat black paint?
i have an 87 F250 thats in good shape body wise but needs a paint job. Since im low on cash and gonna be that way for a while i was kicking around the idea of painting it flat black, Any thoughts? i would like to see some pics flat black fullsize trucks. thank you
I did not want to pay for a paint job on a truck that was going to see more mud, and rocks than pavement, but looking decent was important.
I painted mine with Rustoleum, and used lacquer thinner as a reducer. They said it couldn't be done, but the proof is on the truck. It shines pretty good, (better than I had expected), and has been on the truck for over a year and a half. No peeling flaking, checking, nothing. I can spend time on it, and make it even more shiny, but it is alright the way it is. Oh yeah, I have less than $100.00 in the whole thing, including sandpaper. Never ran a buffer on it, just rubbed it by hand after it was wet sanded. It has enough reflection to see yourself, even today, and for about the same money, doesn't look like a giant BBQ.

The coolest look out there is not flat but a satin-finish black. Flat may just hold more heat than you'd be interested in. But then, its your truck. Kirker paints has some really economical satin finish black that is called HotRod Black. Its a single stage with a hardener added. A lot less than a hundred for a gallon. Check it out.
I needed to match some various body parts that where of differenet colours. I'm not ready for the full restoration so I painted it flat black (PX8 Base & Clear, the base with clear mixed 1:1 with deadner). I've had it few years and love it.
Here's my 77 painted with John Deere Blitz Black. It's doesn't look as good as 77460ford's but it's okay with me. I can't wait to get good rims and lower it a little.

great looking trucks you two! and flat black imo is one of the best colors to go with on a vehicle, especially because of your situation

No. You still need a primer but it is not a two stage like a base coat/ clear coat. Some of the guys flatten down the clear and shoot it over in a second stage to the first stage of the base coat. Kirker paint is single stage so after the primer and primer sealer (if necessary) you shoot on the HotRod Black and that is it. Call t a day and let it dry down.
if dont right it will hold up to alot of stuff i helped my friend paint his ranger and his chevy flat black weve taken them through every creek pond and wooks in the county and they have still help up looks good and alot cheaper
I sprayed mine under my carport early in the morning. I hung up plastic sheeting to keep overspray off the house. Of coarse like I said earlier mine is not the best looking but it'll do for me. I'm happy with it.
