ATS Boost #'s

I just picked up a 89 F350 Crew 4x4 Auto with a 7.3 kitted ATS turbo. I noticed earlier on a thread that someone was saying the ATS was running around 17-18 LB's of boost and a Powerstroke was running over 20. Mine is running at 9 #'s on the ATS gague and I don't remember My 99 Banks kitted Powerstroke running more than 13. So in reality what should this 89 be running safely? If I keep it boosting in OD it heats up on the pyro quick.

What does it have for exhaust?
Where is your thermocouple for the pyrometer located?

9# is about the stock setting on the turbo, but it can go higher.

Not sure on the pyro. Exhaust looks like stock truck from the down pipe back.

If it's the wastegated kit, they say only 7 pounds are needed. The earlier kits used to pull up to 10. The redline on the engine is supposed to be 12, but I've fudged on that a few times.

First thing you need to trash is the stock exhaust.
3" from turbo to the back works well, and is not that expensive.
Muffler should be deleteted or a flow through (see straight thru) type.
Thermo couple, pre turbo in the exhaust manifold is most accurate and should never go over 1200 degrees ( pistons start melting at 1250). I keep mine under 1150 always.
If you have the thermocouple after the turbo, subtract 300 degrees from the above numbers.

Next question is do you see any or lots of black smoke when you are pulling hard with your foot down?

I'll have to see where they have the Thermocouple. Black smoke is not heavy just a light puff once in a while. On exhaust size are we talking 3" ID?
