That is a very subjective question. For me it would be based on two things...how deep my wallet is and how badly I want to thrash my hearing. Anything over 500W RMS is PLENTY loud in a standard cab truck. I've got 300W RMS in my truck and that is enough to make my head pound.
Maticuno is correct. There is so much that goes into a system other than the sheer power. There are systems with 1000 watts total that don't have the sound quality of some with 200 watts total. Also, much depends on the user's intentions and listening habits. For example, is he going for sound quality vs. going for dB and boom? Some of the greatest "sound quality" systems are very low wattage. Of course, great "booming" high dB systems take a lot of power.
Yea i have around 300RMS like maticuno. Its loud. ALWAYS look at thr 'RMS' ratings of Amps, and speakers. Dont take into account the MAX wattage. They're worthless. MAX wattages are just a method used by manufacturers to attract audio newbies. I see this specially in that "1200" watt Xplod.
Exactly. I'm running about 350 wRMS or so, and it's plenty loud, I can hear it way over my exhaust (gutted cat's with no muffler, exit right out of cat) and I can feel it also and I have very good sound quality as well. The max wattage is nothing, go with RMS and for a standard cab I wouldn't go probably over 400 wRMS. Even at 300 wRMS your hearing is going to go down over little time, if you crank it much at all. Tell us what you're wanting to put in, and how loud you want it, and we can tell you more of what you probably want to hear.
my 2 speakers in the doors are 2 ways getting 50 wattz rms each
my 2 speakers behind the sheet are getting 50 wattz rms each
and i have 2 tweeters above my head getting 50 wattz rms each
and i have 2 12's getting 300 wattz rms each
2 amps
1st is a 4x50rms at 4ohm's with the rear down to 2ohms so im putten 100x2rms
in the back with a mono amp pushen 600 wattz rms at 1ohms.
when you push that much power you have to mat the inside of your cab.
So if you dont realy want to spend $$ just get a good deck and replace your
stock speakers with some nice speakers and call it a day.
