Diesel value
4wd holds its value a little better, but unless your in an area with bad winters
it deprerciates as fast as the rest of the truck. Same with Crew cabs. They cost a whole lot more and thats the only reason they seem to retain better value than reg cabs do, but value for cost they are close. Leather seats, moon roofs, audiophile - value drops like rocks. Even auto transmissions lose most of their value - they cost about a grand more new, and make the truck worth about 400.00 more on resale in 5 years- though desireability is greater no doubt.
So in essence it seems that while a truck will depreciate at a given rate in a given area no matter, some options actually debase faster than the truck itself does - like all the power goodies. Others depreciate at about the same rate - 4wd and auto trannies. The diesel engine is about the only thing which seems to always retain a value of about 75% of it's initial cost regardless of age. So while the rest of the truck depreciates around it, the diesel which costs 4500.00 more will still give the rest of the truck an additional 3400.00 in value 7 years later.
And none of this takes into account the rates of inflation for 7 years - it may well hold close to 90% of its original value. Then theres fuel savings and always having gobs of torque -along with the smile factor eveytime you get in.
Well worth it to me. Way I look at it is with 10,000.00 down, I bought a PSD and put 5000.00 down on the rest of the truck, can't beat that.
Congrats on your truck, they are so much fun to drive.
Then when I bought the 99 F250 psd I put down $7K which really dropped my payments. I still owe two years or $9K but the truck is worth $15K+ or $13K traded in. This is 132K miles later too.
I read a report done by a major organization that does national averages of used vehicles around the US. It reported a one year old diesel truck is worth $8,500 more than a gas truck and a 3 year old diesel truck is worth $9,400 more than a three year old gas truck.
Congrats on your truck, they are so much fun to drive.
I'm also sorry if I sounded like I was making derogatory remarks about the other options. I certainly did'int mean to insult other enthusiasts choices or rides - not even our gas brothers (I am one currently and have been for 11 years
. Truth is, if there was'int such a high markup for all the fancies I'd probably have them too when I'm ready to order. I cant afford all the options really. So I must choose. I choose the PSD. I'm not saying all the goodies are bad if you can afford them, just that to me the diesel option is best, regardless of whether its in a Lariat, or stripped XL with no AC. And I mean this from a practical use standpoint as well as retained value. Of course I'm sure there are probably a few guys who love the diesel but would do without it before they'd give up the Lariat or XLT packages, I guess its about whats important to you
. VERY nice truck you have. BTW I did recently get to test drive a used PSD 6 speed. It was perfect. Now I know what "no low end" really means. It feels almost like a naturally aspirated diesel. It has plenty of twist, but no speed - then all of a sudden your off, I like it. I found it best to use first ( not low) up to about 10 mph, then use second to get to 20 or so, shift to third and that seemed to be the smoothest gear for when the turbo boost really gets you up and moving. Very slow and smooth shifting, not a race winning combo but pulling should be cake work, and almost effortless, definately to my liking
.
Go to ebay and look at all the dually 6 speed Powerstrokes in Texas for sale. With so many of the same trucks flooding the used truck market there values really drop.
When the F250 is paid off may fly down to Texas and drive back a dually 6 speed crew cab 4x4 xlt if one can be had with under 100K for wholesale price. The best thing would be the truck would be 5-7 years old and 100% rust free. Last time under the 99 F250 found rust under the doors, on the bottom of the tail gate and on the rear bottom corners of the extended cab doors.
You have the 6 speed figured out and that is exactly how I drive mine. I did a lot of driving in the Rocky Mountains in early September and once I got to Overdrive I never had to take it out of gear, it would climb the grades just fine. The lag on the low end is something that may bother some individuals, but I'm fine with it, the truck drives great and if I need the power, I just rev the rpms up a little higher before disengaging the clutch.
Well, it will be hard now waiting till March. I started looking at Superduties in September last year. I drooled, I went to the truck lot with my 2yr old daughter every Sunday morning when no salesmen were around. We would just look at all the Superduties and drool on them. I took about 7 months researching and thinking about the V-10 and the PSD, about the options, and asked many questions. After the 7 months I ordered and counted everyday until it arrived.
As for the options, I actually wanted cloth, carpet delete (so I could easily clean the cab floors). But the wife works for Ford so we get a discount and she wanted a bunch of options as she knew we would be taking it everywhere (and I mean everywhere, it is the vehicle we take on vacations and she wanted to be comfy so she could sleep while traveling). Well, the wife won the battle, but no complaints here, I gave in to the leather and carpet, and she gave in and let me get the PSD.
