The check engine light on my 1989 5.0 EFI has been on since I bought it. It runs great but when I checked the codes I came up with 31. What does this mean. For some reason apperently I don't have "permission" to access the site search page.
code 31 PFE, EVP or EVR circuit below minimum voltage. Ford has always had egr problems very poor system. There are three components on this system the egr valve itself the egr position sensor which is bolted on top on to the valve and the egr vacume regulator it is a part off to the side that has an electrical connection on top and a vaccum connection on the bottom with the green vaccum line going to the EGR valve. With the engine running apply vaccum to the egr valve if the engine stumbles or dies the valve is working if not the valve is either bad or the hole into the intake is plugged. Take the position sensor off the egr valve and make sure the rod move smoothly you can check this with an ohm meter to see if the ohms reading changes with the movement of the rod. Last and usually the problem is the egr vaccum regulator it is the part off to the side.Make sure you are getiing voltage and vaccum to it and vaccum out of it. If not replace it.
